In a recent PC World article, one of my colleagues suggested that the "Slimmed PS3 Won't Save Sony." Matt Peckham Aug 21, 2009 7:34 am Let's play devil's advocate and consider the alternative, which is that it will, with an appended "and then some." Sony just slashed the price of its flagship console by $100, a full 25% drop, significant by any measure. For 300 bones, you can have a Blu-ray playback device with integrated wireless, 1080p HDMI output, a 120GB upgradeable (within warranty) hard drive, and free online multiplayer et al. support. Not too shabby. |

Microsoft has launched an Xbox LIVE dashboard update that contains all kinds of new goodies, plus a look towards the future. While you can download the update today, some of the newer features won't be available until Thursday, August13. Here's a quick breakdown of what you have to look forward to

Games on Demand Starting Thursday, you will be able to download and store game titles on your Xbox 360 or external hard drive. No disc necessary for gameplay. Titles will include Mass Effect, Assasin's Creed, BioShock, and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The average price is about $30 for a downloadable game, and you will be able to purchase games with Microsoft points or a credit card. New titles will be added every Tuesday. |

The company may have learned its lesson, but gamers were given a powerful look at how much digital content can change after purchase.
