FCC gives Hollywood control over your home theater

After almost two years of deliberation, the Federal Communications Commission has granted Hollywood and cable companies permission to shut down analog streams to HDTV equipped home theaters. The geek term for this is "selectable output control" (SOC)—until now forbidden by the FCC. The Motion Picture Association of America requested a waiver on the SOC ban in May of 2008, arguing that without it, Hollywood studios could not securely offer consumers pre-DVD released movies on television.

China, South Korea lead in green tech funding

China may arguably be the world's biggest polluter, but it seems the country is also the most serious investor in green tech.

A third of its economic recovery package was spent on green-technology investment in the form of high-speed rail trains and infrastructure, wind energy, solar energy, and energy-efficient lighting. It equates to about 3 percent of China's GDP (gross domestic product), according to a new United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) book released Wednesday.

What if I took to the pages of a major business magazine and made the bold recommendation that, because humans have run out of new places on Earth that we can migrate to, it is past time for us to make the collective leap to faster-than-light travel so that we can explore neighboring solar systems? Your reaction would probably be something like, "Yes, of course everyone would love to go faster than light, and if it were as easy as just deciding we all want to do it then it would be done already."
