Sony drops video console price in the U.S.

Sony The price of a Sony Playstation 3 80GB has been cut in the U.S. market.  This model will now sell for $499.  The even cheaper 40GB model will be launched in the States, next month.

The PS3 40GB has already been launched in Europe and Japan.  It should be in-stock, with U.K. retailers, tomorrow.

A major difference between the 40GB model, and the more expensive ones, is that it will not play PS2 games. The 40GB PS3 does have a Blu-ray drive, and an HDMI port. It lacks a memory card reader, however.

Meanwhile, Sony is selling up its stake, in the plant which makes Cell processors, to Toshiba.  Toshiba was already one of the partners in the development of Cell technology.
