Linux Replacing Windows In Data Centers

A Linux Foundation survey found increasing preference for the open source operating system in new server deployments.
A recent survey of 1,948 users found Windows edging out Unix as the top operating system that Linux replaces in migration projects.

Linux's presence in the data center has grown rapidly alongside Windows' -- together the two have been the fastest growing data center operating systems, frequently at the expense of Unix. Now a new survey by the Linux Foundation suggests that, at least among large Linux users, Linux is growing at the expense of Windows, too.

Paul Allen, entrepreneur and cofounder of Microsoft, has filed a lawsuit against 11 companies for infringements on his Web search patents. Announced on Friday afternoon, the suit names Apple, Google, Facebook, Netflix, YouTube, and Microsoft partner Yahoo as defendants for violating four Interval Licensing LLC patents, though the court will likely have to weigh whether the patents in question are "obvious" or not.

Xtreme Power to supply proposed U.S. grid connector

Xtreme Power announced Wednesday its PowerCell energy storage and Dynamic Power Resources energy management system will be used in what could be the most significant transmission station in the U.S. electric grid.

In March, Tres Amigas got approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to offer transmission services at negotiated rates across the three main arteries of the U.S. electrical grid. The agency is now considering allowing it to build and connect a mega-hub based in Clovis, N.M.
