From Ubergizmo: Half-Life has been hailed as one of the great titles in video game history, and when it came out, it looked really good -for that time-, but characters and scenes were really blocky and lack realism. |

Microsoft, Yahoo coy as reports of new search deal surface
By Jacqui Cheng | Published: December 01, 2008 - 11:24AM CT
After the messy breakup between Microsoft and Yahoo, most observers never expected the two to get back together. But after a brief rebound fling with Google that eventually went sour, it seems as if Yahoo has been driven back into the comforting arms of Microsoft—at least according to the latest rumors. Over the weekend, news leaked that Microsoft was in new talks to buy Yahoo's search business for $20 billion, but the two companies aren't ready to discuss any possible deal just yet. |

The open-source operating system still has major problems that need immediate attention. Our expert recommends configuration, versioning, and GUI enhancements, to name a few.
By Serdar Yegulalp InformationWeek December 1, 2008 04:00 AM
Despite the fact that it's been around since 1991, Linux remains a work in progress. It's not perfect, nor does anyone pretend it is. The places where it needs the most immediate improvement are also a matter of debate: what's crucially important to some is only marginally important to others.
Still, there's no question that there are key areas where Linux is lacking -- not just missing individual features, but things that are actively dysfunctional and which need immediate attention. I'm going to run down several major areas where Linux, as an operating system and as a platform, needs work. [Comments....] |

With Fedora 10 finally entering the world earlier this week, we have performed benchmarks comparing the performance of Ubuntu 8.10 and Fedora 10 Published on November 28, 2008 Written by Michael Larabel In our testing we used both the 32-bit and 64-bit builds of each distribution and then ran a series of automated tests through the Phoronix Test Suite. Our test system consisted of an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 clocked at 4.00GHz, an ASUS P5E64 WS Professional motherboard, MSI 9800GT 512MB graphics card, 2GB of OCZ DDR3-1333MHz RAM, and Western Digital WD1600JS-00MHB0 160GB SATA HDD. With each distribution we had manually installed the NVIDIA 180.08 driver and Phoronix Test Suite 1.4.2. Per our standard testing protocol, each distribution was left in its stock configuration (though as part of that, SELinux is disabled on Fedora). The final i686 and x86_64 builds of Ubuntu 8.10 and Fedora 10 were each tested. [Phoronix...] [Comments...] |

November 28, 2008 4:00 AM PST HANOI, Vietnam--Every obstacle presents an opportunity. I saw this firsthand in Hanoi. Posted by Dong Ngo The obstacle in question: the iPhone 3G. Since its launch, it has proven a much tougher nut to crack than the original iPhone. Without a viable software-based unlock solution, the only way to make the phone work with any GSM carrier has been the use of a proxy SIM. Put this piece of very thin circuitboard in the iPhone 3G atop the carrier's SIM, and you can make calls and text on a new network. |

Doing its part to bring the dream of ubiquitous live and pre-recorded television to life, Sling.com has shifted from a private to a public beta.
By David Chartier | Published: November 28, 2008 - 10:52AM CT We took a look at Sling Media's video portal earlier this month and found it to be quite successful. From The Register: Supporters of Gary McKinnon are planning a further demo outside the US embassy next Friday as time runs out to prevent the hacker's extradition to the US. Protesters hope to present a letter for US president-elect Barack Obama to embassy officials during the demo, which kicks off at 5pm on 5 December. They also hope to present a letter to the office of former prime minister Tony Blair, whose London house is a short walk away from the US Embassy. |

From Trusted Reviews: Sony revealed its forthcoming Wireless Keypad add-on for the PS3 controller at the Leipzig Games convention in August, but we've waited until now for word on a release date. Luckily for those still stuck on Christmas gift ideas - I know I have relatives badgering me - Sony is pushing the device out for the first week of December, so there's still time for said relatives to grab one. |

Latest Greenpeace Rankings Still Put Apple Down
Dan Moren, Macworld.com Nov 26, 2008 10:10 am It's almost Thanksgiving, and you know what that means: arguments and bickering. Apple and Greenpeace are going at in style: hot on the heels of Apple's passive aggressive green MacBook ads, the environmental organization has released the latest version of its Guide to Greener Electronics which--and come on, are you really surprised?--shows Apple falling in the ranks despite its recent improvements. |

Spammer remains on the lam, but courts hope big award will scare others
Nov 25, 2008 | 04:57 PM By Tim Wilson DarkReading
Social networking site Facebook today won an $873 million court judgment against a spammer who has been routinely deluging the site with sales pitches and sexually explicit messages.
According to an Associated Press report, the judgment against Adam Guerbuez of Montreal is the largest ever awarded under the U.S. CAN-SPAM Act. The award is more than three times as much as Facebook will gross in revenue this year. |

As you've no doubt heard, Fedora 10 was released today. We are pleased to make this latest Redhat operating system available for download. Pick your poison from one of the following links: Full DVD ISO images: 32-bit x86 DVD, or 64-bit x86 DVD
Live CDs allow you to experiment with a fully operation OS on a CD, without having to install anything. If you like it, you can then install from the CD. These come with Gnome as the default desktop environment. 32-bit x86 Live CD, or 64-bit x86 Live CD
Some people don't like Gnome, or would like to take a look at what KDE (another major desktop environment) has to offer. If you are one of those people, you can get the Live CD with KDE instead: 32-bit x86 Live KDE CD, or 64-bit x86 Live KDE CD |

A known cross-site scripting glitch could let an attacker hijack messages sent to the victim's Gmail account by redirecting specific messages, says a security researcher.
By Thomas Claburn InformationWeek November 24, 2008 07:20 PM
A possible Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Gmail vulnerability that could allow an attacker to turn Gmail's filtering mechanism into a tool for covert information theft appears not to be directly related to a Gmail security flaw that Google fixed last year, according to Google.
In a post on the GeekCondition.com blog, Web developer Brandon Partridge on Sunday warned that an attacker can force an unsuspecting Gmail user to create a malicious message filter without his or her knowledge. [Comments...] |
