Is Intel shooting self in foot?

I can't tell how obvious it is, but not long ago, Intel refused to cross license with Nvidia, essentially blocking Nvidia from the conroe chipset market, vertical monopoly anyone?

This shuts Intel machines out of SLI.

Now with AMD buying ATI, Intel as stopped future licencing of ATI chipsets as well... Does this mean crossfire is out going forward?

As much as Intel wants complete ownersip of the chipset market, are they willing to give up the serious (and highly profitable) hardcore gaming rig market so that their chipset division has more marketshare?

For gaming, does this mean that conroe will rarely see its true potential in gaming?
