Whitespace in HTML is pretty much ignored. It's an HTML thing. If you put multiple spaces, tabs, carriage returns, or newlines into a post, only the first one will be acknowledged and rendered. Everything after that, up to the next non-whitespace character will be ignored.
If you look at the actual HTML source, you'll see that it's still there, it's just not rendered.
