Cool Athlon 64 has thermal throttling

I didn' t know this! The Athlon 64 has thermal throttling - well, perhaps thermal limiting would be a better description.

Internal to the chip is a thermal monitoring system. This is completely seperate to the thermal diode that the motherboard can read. At some preset temperature (set by AMD), an increase in temperature will result in the processor asserting the THERMTRIP_L signal (So the motherboard knows that something's up), and stopping it's internal clocks. Stopping the internal clocks is pretty much the same thing as shutting down the CPU until it cools down again.

Overclockers CAN disable this function in the 8HDA3+ BIOS where it's identified as AMD Cool and Quite.

I have seen that option in the BIOS on my MSI K8T800 board.

As far as I can work out, it's not the same thing as AMD Cool and Quiet. AMD Cool and Quiet is a bit of work by the BIOS/software that adjusts the CPU's voltage and frequency to match the workload put upon the CPU. That way, the CPU produces less heat when when it's not fully loaded, as it's not running flat out.

That's not the same as the thermal limiting internal to the CPU.
