Thanks, I'll put it on the list! Wasn't there another movie a few years ago that dealt with the same subject pretty spectacularly? Guess it's an ongoing fear for Californians. Can't remember the name, sorry. Speaking of earthquakes, a 9.0 can hammer the coast of the Pacific Northwest at any moment. Can't say I'm happy about our Big One. Fairly good chance that it won't hurt for more than a minute. Then again, the New Madrid fault in your part of the world is known for Big One's too. Dang, is there no escape?

I figure Yellowstone will blow and then we'll get hit by a comet, then the sun will go nova and then we'll be invaded by extra-terrestrials looking to harvest whatever's left for 'organic components'. Basically, we're screwed. Might as well enjoy the sunshine. ![]() Last edited by Gizmo; 4th November, 2015 at 05:17 AM. |

LOL! You make some very good points! I really hope that it will be Soylent Green for THEM (space invaders and or other horribobble creatures) and not us! Speaking of the future I watched a pretty bad movie set in South Africa named "Chappie" (2015) the other night. Some crooks accidentally get their hands on a damaged police robot (gangland is really awful in the future, these man-sized robots are most excellent anti-gang fighters) and train it to do their bidding. Very ugly looking people, surprised they didn't break the Panaflex lenses. Worth watching on a boring quirky evening. Saw some early Wes Anderson movies I ordered from Amazon. Can't recommend them if you don't wish to re-live teenage years that are very far from at least how my life was. Too "cute" for comfort.

Saw "The Gunman" (2015) last night, it's another turn off yer brain and watch "Superman" triumph over truly impossible odds movie. If I had a quarter of the strength and courage of the main character played by Sean Penn my life would be very different. Hopefully I wouldn't be "a hit man for the mob!" It rates a 5.8 from imdb, but that must be from people who abhor violence or maybe Mr Penn, or both. One and a half thumb's up.

Been seeing a few Netflix offerings that aren't good enough to comment on. Yay, hooray. Saw a documentary about HR Giger last night, perhaps worth watching if you want to know about the career of the man who won an Oscar for creating the monster in "Alien." This guy has created a lot of very twisted art. After 45 minutes I finally realized that the people were speaking Swiss-German. It's only been forty four years since I lived there, and they were not at all laying it on thick. Glad I'm so sharp!

I watched all of it in one sitting, so it was good enough for me. The blond eyelashes that the young woman sported were very disconcerting. Exactly why, I don't know. Got the disc of "Synecdoche, New York (2008) from Amazon (what a strange corporation, it makes very, very little money but its owner is a multi billionaire). It's a strange film, I had to watch it seriously to ~ understand the screenplay more or less. This film is about as far as you can get from action epics. I recommend it to... folks that are averse to bangs and booms and can really concentrate for two hours. Now I get it -- the title rhymes with "Schenectady" -- parts of the film take place there. It becomes more and more difficult to come up with "original" booms and bangs, my hat's off to writers who can pull it off.

Saw "Inland Empire" (2006) last night. It's the darkest (literally) film I've ever seen and seems to have no reference to the geographic area whatsoever. Laura Dern is superb, and it may be the most confusing, or perhaps confused movie I've ever seen. David Lynch strikes again. Recommended if you need to pass three very unsettling hours.

Watched "Serenity" last night with my son. "Firefly" was a show that died before its time. Joss Whedon is a very talented writer. |
| ||||
"Serenity" (2005) gets 8.0 from imdb. This is an extremely good rating but I don't know if I've forgiven Joss Wheden for "Buffy..." yet. Eesh that was a terrible tv series. Maybe it was the cast's fault?

Different genre. Maybe that's why? |

Saw "The Lone Ranger" (2013) recently. It was better than I thought it would be, Johnny Depp (the publicity still with that bird on his head made him look ridiculous, imho) pulls off Tonto very well, the movie would have been pure bad if the guy playing the Lone Ranger had to carry the flick. Helena Bonham Carter plays her role memorably well but Ruth Wilson's talents went to waste, although her role was ably filled. One and a quarter thumb's up. Watched "A League of Their Own" (1992) for the first time last night. Geena Davis is fantastic, Lori Petti is outstanding and Tom Hanks puts in an enjoyable performance. Saw "The Da Vinci Code" (2006) again recently, maybe Mr Hank's performance wasn't great or perhaps his face was not aging well in that film? I really liked "A League of Their Own", two thumb's up.

"A League of Their Own" I found to be surprisingly enjoyable myself. I've pretty well stayed away from "Lone Ranger"; it didn't really look that interesting, and I heard the reviewers really panned it. I might give it a go though, if you think it's worth 1 1/4. |
| ||||
I agree, I think "A League of Their Own" is a very good movie. Mebbe "The Lone Ranger" deserves one and a third thumb's up? It's not a classic Western--but it is a classic Western. Hard to pigeon hole. Johnny Depp does a very fine Tonto, his voice carries the character extremely well. In the tv series (yes, I'm that old) the Lone Ranger had an outstanding voice. Interesting flip.

I put "San Andreas" (2015) on my Netflix send it to me list. How far are you from the Mighty Mississippi? I sure hope that you and your family are dry and warm.

The Mississippi is about 275 miles from me, however Spring River and Shoal Creek are much closer (especially after the rains). Fortunately I don't have a river in my living room (though I do have a pond in my back yard now). But I'm much better off than some of my neighbors. |
| ||||
I didn't know that it's possible to be that far from the Big Muddy in your state. Not happy to learn that you have neighbors with wet feet but I'm glad that yours are dry. Hope the rain stops! Happy New Year!

I'm about as far as you can get actually; I'm right where Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma come together. |
