Saw "The Last Enemy" (2008) over the weekend. It's a five part BBC/PBS drama about a man (Benedict Cumberbatch) who returns to the UK after four years away. It's set slightly in the future and he discovers that the TIA Program has made life nearly impossible if your ID is "flagged" for any reason. I named this all seeing eye regime "Thanks In Advance" years ago in honor of the fact that every individual had unknowingly given the PTB the right to snoop into every facet of their life forever. It's a good drama and was ahead of its time in telling it like it is. Two thumbs up.

"Backtrack" (2015) stars Adrien Brody as a psychologist obsessed with the past. For some reason IMDB rates this film at 5.9. Wrong! 7.0 at least is more accurate. Very well done Australian thriller. I thought it took place in London for at least the first 45 minutes--who knew Australia could be rainy and look old as well? Mr Brody is one fine actor, the difference of his character in this film is almost light years from the one he played in "The Grand Budapest Hotel." (2014) Highly recommended.

Saw "Red" (2010) last night. Imdb gives it a 7.1, I think it's a bit better than that. Saw "Red2" (2013) years ago and wasn't impressed. It was a nice surprise to discover that the original is much more entertaining. Mary-Louise Parker was delightful, Helen Mirren is always top notch, Bruce Willis, John Malkovitch and Morgan Freeman all give great drama and comedy performances. Both thumb’s up!

Saw Michael Moore's "Where to Invade Next" (2015) last night. Two thumb's up! Pretty obvious that I'm a fan of his work, yet I must say that this may be his best yet. Common sense that is originally American is on display in the European countries he visits. In aid of reminding we Americans of what we once very successfully had as policy here at home, and have to re-establish if we want to avoid permanent hell, imho. He isn't quite as "do these common sense things or bust" as I am---yet we as Americans once held these things self evident. If you have a liberal bone in your body you owe it to yourself to see this movie. If you don't have this single liberal bone you simply MUST watch this film. 7.6 from IMDB.

"Remember" (2015) is a suspenseful drama that features genuwine old people. The plot is carried strongly by the antiquarians. I may like it so much because I'm now old enough to see ancient ones as genuine people. When I was young old folks were just not real to me. Because we will be young forever-- in our inexperienced minds. Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau lead the cast. The end of it was shocking to me, a bona fide surprise that lasted for a while beyond the end of the film. Both thumb's up! If you're under thirty five you might not be able to sit through this movie. I confess that I couldn't when I was a whipper-snapper. 7.4 from IMDB.

Watched "The Battle of the Bulge" (1965) recently. A poor attempt imho. The documentaries I've seen were much better. The producers relied on "star power" to pull the movie along. Sorry, even Robert Ryan, Henry Fonda and Robert Shaw couldn't provide the push to save this POOR attempt at portraying this desperate piece of American military history. Three thumbs down.

"Youth" (2015) is an interesting flick. Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel and Rachel Weisz provide very good performances. It's an analysis of old age--but I didn't understand this film. I saw it late at night and couldn't give it my full attention. Two thumb's up. Three thumbs up to anyone that can explain the plot to me. Thanks!

Well, I would think it would be pretty good with those folks in it, but I have to admit to a bit of concern that you couldn't make heads or tails of the plot. |

I think I sort of understand the basic plot. Gotta remember that the meds I need to sleep definitely interfere with any keeping awake and finding what the heck is happening on screen ability after about 4 AM. Some nights I get the plot, some not so much. Mr Caine is very good at not being obvious, Mr Keitel always seems at least somewhat menacing to me and Rachel Weisz always makes the eyes feel good.

It's the right season so I watched "Young Frankenstein" (1974) again last night. Loved it! I will miss Gene Wilder forever. 8.1 from IMDB and it deserves it.

Watched "Age of Consent" (1969) last night. The star of the movie is Helen Mirren--as a young (and extremely hot woman). James Mason also stars but the audience is waiting breathlessly for Ms Mirren to appear. She reveals all--but very tastefully--toward the end of the film. Two thumb's up for a good quality movie from a different world.

Watched "Hacksaw Ridge" and "Passengers" recently. Both very good movies, assuming you can handle perhaps the most well done and frightening footage on WWII I've ever seen. "Passengers" is one hell of a good film. Congratulations to Chris Pratt, he's been working hard at becoming a better actor, and he is succeeding!

Liked "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" quite a lot. Don't know if Anglophilia is necessary to enjoy the movie but it probably helps. Not only is Eva Green a knockout, she also can act. The flick is surprisingly original.

Surprisingly good: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Pleasant surprise! "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2" is as good or better than the original. I highly recommend it for a Sci-Fi fix.
