On board LAN wont crossover properly

I am using two pcchips motherboards with nforce 2 built in LAN and latest drivers, trying to connect the two with a crossover cable, auto config under xp doesnt work properly as it gives one machine a bad ip, so i thought ok and manually assigned ip's of 168.152.0.1 for server and 168.152.0.2 for client, and a subnet of 255.255.255.255 (also tried 255.255.255.0) but it still wont share the internet at all, and when i try and get them to ping each other all i get is a host unreachable erorr message, yet it will show some packets recieved on target machine (like three) is there anything i am missing here to get it to work??? (i have also tried seeing if i cld get to work work with half duplex or 10mbit rather then 100 but still now luck )

-thanks

Sorry to ask but are you sure it's a crossover cable. I remember all too well trying to connect two PC's and using the wrong cable.

Even if it is a cross-over cable, it may be faulty. I've had problems with brand new cables which turned out to be faulty.

you would have much less trouble if you were to pick up a cheap router.

Are you specifically trying to set up internet connection sharing? If this is the case, then the ethernet ports on BOTH computers should be set to "detect settings automatically", and the ADSL connection should be shared with Internet Connection Sharing.

What this then does is automatically set the ethernet card on the computer with the USB modem to 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 and activate a DHCP server. Check that you have no proxies configured in the browsers on either machine. If you have a firewall, you may need to tell it to allow shared internet connections, or disable it altogether.

If you've done all this already, sorry to state the obvious
