Looks promising that the first Barcelonas will debut at 2.6 GHz. That's not far off the speed bins they are getting now from the 90 nm process.

according to the dailytech chart on launch mid this year the fastest we're going to get is 2.3GHz chips, you'll have to wait the best part of a year for 2.6GHz chips not seeing production until Q2'08.
2.4 and 2.5GHz chips are slated for Q3'07 though which would put it in time for the xmas rush. However these are opty's they'll cost the earth and need ecc ram. Hopefully athlons wont be far behind but knowing amd they like to milk the operton line.

To me they seem to have a worryingly low amount of cache, amd lost performance when it went from 1meg per core to 512kb per core.
Even with the 2megs of L3 cache these quad cores only have as much as a conroe. The latter of which can addresses all 4megs by one core if need be.

2.3GHz is also slow, they're back at the speeds they were cranking at the end of the athlon xp era. Even if they can match penryn clock for clock they're going to be down on raw clockspeed, intel have been shipping 2.66GHz parts for a while now and its only a matter of time before they get a speed bump nearer to the 3GHz point

AMD had to come up with something, I wish their something was more substantial. No real reason to wait for these procs for AMD fanboys, sigh.

Oh wow. I didn't realize the 2.6 Ghz parts weren't due until a YEAR from now.

That's a whole 'nuther kettle o' fish. Debuting at 2.6 GHz is good. Debuting at 2.3 Ghz and taking a year to get another 15% is not very good. One could even say bad.

If AMD can produce their chips with "Fusion" technology, integrating more and more features on die, that could still put them in a very competetive position. Of particular interest would be on die extreme high speed ethernet, and possibly even an SAS RAID implementation.

Also the integrated video and ethernet could be a big bonus for ultraportables. Can't wait to see what this ATI aquisition actually leads to in the long term.

Ultra portables maybe, anything else not really much use, most of those that you've listed are currently limited by other factors than the cpu -> ich / mch interface by a long way (mechanical read speed on hard drives, hard drive speed on ethernet etc). If they were integrated onto the cpu they'd just be taking up real estate in a very expensive neighbourhood. I'd rather have more on die cache than on die ethernet!

Why make an ethernet controller at 65nm when one built in your old 130nm fab runs just fine.
Its a clever method intel have, use old fabs to create components that dont need to be on the bleeding edge of silicon manufacture. They certainly still have plants churning out 130nm chip, i think the last of the 180nm are in the process of being upgraded to 32/45nm test fabs

Intel finally got their act together, it's great for us, but bad for AMD.

Weather you use Intel or AMD , you've got to root for AMD to surpass them! As shaky as that looks at the moment...

Definitely, support for the underdog is a must.
