AMD to target Atom with... Athlon

The first thrust of AMD's two-pronged attack on Intel's Atom processor will be launched in November, leaked roadmap slides have revealed.

I think it's great that AMD are targeting Intel's Atom processor this way.....right now they have an advantage in performance and power consumption when you take into account the entire chipset.

Problem is, that can't possibly last too long. Intel aren't going to continue to let AMD eat their lunch in this arena, especially when everyone is of the opinion that low-cost, low-power chips are the wave of the future. AMD had better have a MUCH more power efficient CPU in the works, because you can bet serious bucks that Intel are working on a more power efficient chipset.

You do know that Intel played second fiddle for almost all of the Athlon/AthlonXP/Athlon64 days right? 0_o

This is promising, for a while I wanted to build a low power file and webserver, ended up initially using my old xp1700 rig before an alarming power bill drove me to debian'ing an nslu2 with two 500gb drives as I simply didnt want to pay via prices. However the performance of this is a little bad (266mhz arm with 32mb ram)

Hopefully the competition from amd and intel will make the low power arena a bit more interesting. I was on the verge of getting a dual core atom board, more for the gigabit ethernet then anything else, when I heard about AMD making their move.

As per right honourable dsio's comments, you might wanna look where intel where at before they released the core range of chips. Notably being kept alive by oem prebuilds to people who didnt have a clue how shoddy the pentium 4's were.

Keeping up with the Jone's is less important than it used to be for me. The olde P4 is quite adequate. Sooner or later I'll move up the food chain. Hmm, later seems to be the truth of the matter!

Interestingly enough, trustedreviews did a comparison between Intel Atom and Via Nano. The power consumption of the Nano was higher than the Atom, but so was the performance. They did try to compare performance per watt, to come up with the answer that performance per watt was the same between the two.

That would suggest that Via's processors have come a long way since the earlier days!

Well you have to remember that Atom is as crippled as can be. The architectural complexity of Atom is somewhere in between a 486 and a Pentium 1.

Intel's primary goals here was to minimize size/cost. While AMD's solution will certainly win on power consumption and performance, it will be difficult for them to compete on cost and still make a profit since K8 is FAR more complex than Atom.

Those Intel unmentionables sure haven't made it easy for AMD for the last umpteen years. ^%#@^!

I must admit that's true! I'm just tired of AMD fumbling and bumbling along.
