Hi Ricky! You don't need to change your monitor settings to run 3DMarks. 3D Marks changes it for you while running it's benchmarks. Then returns your monitor to your original settings. I hope this helps you. Welcome to AOA!

So far as I know, 1280x1024 is required for the CPU and feature tests, although you can run the graphics tests at other resolutions. |

My bad! I missed that you were using Vantage, about which I know nothing! ":O}

Could be that the monitor EDID info regarding max resolution is bugging it out.

It's a 1440x900 monitor; it CAN'T DO 1280x1024, and the CPU and features tests in 3DMark VANTAGE REQUIRE that resolution, and ONLY that resolution. Least ways, that what I'm getting from FutureMark. |

Mind you, if the monitor was not specifically set, and it didn't know that it couldnt do it, it probably could, and would just run the test while the screen blanked out displaying "cannot display" or whatever. There's also gpu scaling that might allow you to have the gpu rescale the output before it reaches the monitor.
