Thumbs up Quiet case fans.

I'm in the middle of some case mods and found that completely removing the predrilled holes where the case fans are located almost completely eliminates the case fan noise!

If you've ever connected a case fan outside the box you'll appreciate what I mean.

It's worth a try.

Is this what you're talking about?

I cut all that stuff out, and actually widened the two bottom fans from 92mm to 120mm, and then widened the screw holes and installed rubber grommets to cut down on vibration noise... The fans seem to be very quiet, even with metal mesh filters installed in front of them.

The fans are of the Panaflo M1A variety, so they're not particularly noisy to begin with... Still, I couln't hear them when I turned them on, so you're definitely right about that.

I've been dragging my feet quite a bit with this project lately, as it's been a bit too chilly and rainy to do anything else. It's pretty much ready to go except for some soundproofing and a nice paint job. I had to press it into service before it was actually finished, though, since the PSU in my older case seemed to be dying.

Anyway, some more pics of the fairly basic stuff I've done to it so far are available at http://www.padwick.net/gallery/echomod

That's one hell of a case! You could use 1/2 of that case for a beer fridge.

A few people suggested that I create a cube-like case from the two server cases that I have but I don't have enough stuff to fill the case I'm modding now.

Did you use a window kit or fabricate your own?

When I did the hole for the fan I cut out enough metal to match the fan casing not just the blade... I didn't want the remaining metal to obstruct the air flow.

No kit for the window, I just measured out what I thought would be a good size, and then I used a CD I had lying around to trace a curve for each of the corners.

I am SOOO tempted to get one of those desktop fridges and stick it in the drive bay half of the case

Your fan cuts look nice and clean..! What kind of case are you using? Something else that I think might help ever so slightly with noise and with airflow is some foam tape stuff I'm using on the inside of the case. I taped up the intake holes for the fans so they're making a good seal against the case and presumably absorbing some vibrations from the fan. It seems to be working, I can hardly tell that those three intake fans are on.
