Well, first, you have to have done a few things. Then, you have to be able to make them money by having a place where you can display your mod. Here, right? Wrong. You will need a site that is not a forum site to be taken seriously. Post em here to get traffic. But you have to have a clean site where the mods will exist basically forever. If you are just plugging them on a forum, your thread, and their profit, are off the front page and forgotten in a week. I got some free stuff in exchange for listing a couple of the vendors who I bought the PC mac classic parts from. Was after the fact, and they were silly to hook me up with toys, cause I fully intended to list all the suppliers anyway. Nothing real big. The ebay seller I got the display from gave me a second display, hoping for a second mod. Centrix-intl ( not sure on the spelling) gave me some odds and ends for basically selling out their stock of that board. I put the mods on conrad's site PC-critic.com (no longer there).
You really can't approach them with nothing. You have to say "Here are some of my mods". And THEN ask for free stuff in exchange for mentioning their site.
Also, your mods can't just be a copy of other people's stuff. Doing it the easy way doesn't impress anyone. Break new ground. Even a pointless mod is a good mod if people think it's cool. There are some that can always be done repeatedly. The briefcase, the ammo can, the nes, carputers, theme case mods, disgusting overcooling, etc. You have to be able to get people's attention repeatedly. I'm too lazy for that, so I just pay for my stuff.
It doesn't have to cost a fortune to pwn. I've yet to see a decent toaster mod. I wanted to do one, but couldn't find the right toaster for it. Wanted an antique 2 slot and side door toaster for a laptop transplant with a small LCD that would come up out of the back slot when you pushed the button down. Wanted to do a open face CD drive under the door. Basically a laptop CD with the top cut off wired up so it would think the drive was open if the door was open.
You could find a small cracked screen laptop on ebay for less than $100, and people would drool over it. Story of my life though. I just never found the right toaster. QQ
