Informal poll: How boned am I?

Here's the deal: My K6-2 450 was running at 124 X 4.5. I tried for more. First I went to 124 X 5 and it was no go. Crashed part way through the boot. During it's attempt to boot it said I had a registry error and restored to a previous configuration. Based on that failure and past attempts at 112 X 5.5 it seems my cpu doesn't like over 600mhz. Fair enough. Next I tried 133 X450 (without rebooting to 124 X 4.5 to let the system re-synchronize itself) but no go. Similar registry problems and it set itself to a previous setting. Next I tried 133 X 4 (hoping the fsb would more than compensate for the lower total speed. It booted, but it took for ever and a day. Once running it was sluggish as hell. At this point I know it was restored to a previous configuration. I used to have a mouse with a blown left button on that system and so I mapped the keys backwards to be able to use the mouse. Under this setup my mouse buttons were reversed so I know it restored a previous configuration. It took a long time to try to shut down SETI so I could test the setup using Sandra. After a minute of waiting for SETI to end SETI crashed. Then I tried to reset the mouse buttons in control panel but that crashed. Then all of the text started turning into garbage, like the squiggles and boxes that represent where characters should be if you go to a foreign web site without having the character set for that language installed. (hope that makes sense)

So I powered down and reset the board to 124 X 4.5. Tried to boot and: "registry/config error run command prompt and run SCANREG"

I go to command prompt option but the system can't find any of the files listed in the config.sys. Then it says WIN.COM is missing. Now I'm at a prompt and try to run SCANREG but it's not there. I did a global drive search and it wasn't anywhere. The windows directory has no files, only a "temp" subdirectory, which is empty itself.

So the question is "How boned am I?"

1) Boned.
2) Yer boned.
3) Really boned.
4) Oh man, You are so boned!

Seriously, if your stuck with MS products, most of us are, GHOST is the only peace of mind. looks like total corruption to me. But then I'm not really great at fixing messed up OS's.

Sounds like your harddrive decided crap out on you. Hopefully no HW damage, but is sounds like the files are toasted. Sounds like it's time to reformat and reinstall the OS. With the errors your getting, sounds like it's more trouble to deal with, than wipe it clean and start over.

Daniel's suggestion is good, though XP seems to have enough backup features (that work) you may want to go there (even on a slower system like that, once it's running/loaded, who cares? ).

I just did the fastest reinstall ever, complete with all of the bells and whistles for my cable internet setup, and as a result of my speed and a floppy disk with bad sectors( ) I lost only 2 SETI wu's. the one I was in the middle of and one in my cache.

Yeah well he just put a PIII 866 on his farm so we're no longer putting out wu's at the same pace. I need more hardware to get back into competition. And I don't see me affording anything until February at the earliest.

What would be impressive is if Pixar took time off of making any movies, and put either SETI or Folding onto their rigs for a bit. With the sort of number crunching those rigs can do, they could make some MAD advances for either! Or both!

Actually, you didn't bone yourself too badly. A quick format and reinstall, and you're good to go. Provided you had a good backup....You did have a good backup, didn't you?

No backup. It was just my backup machine anyhow so a full reinstall was no great loss. Its running again. Too bad the same couldn't be said for my cable (internet included) all last night.

A desperate ploy:
When I didn't know how long my cable would be out I signed up for a 56K account with AT&T (My cable provider). It was free for the first 15 days, so I paid nothing to stay connected. Serves AT&T right!!

Might be the way to go....at least for now.

It's a shame that ted won't give me that option. I want dial up, I pay more. Sympatico high speed phone internet service, along with Bell satellite tv, is looking mighty good right about now. You hear that ted?
