Radeon 9600 SE help

Alright guys, I wander if u can help my m8,

He has a Radeon 9600 SE with 128mb and when he plays a game where the graphics start to get intense, the whole machine locks up.

the GPU only has a heatsink on it.

The game he is playing is quite an old game (Delta Force Land Warior) so the grafx aint brilliant to start off with?

Anybody got any comments I can pass on?

cheers all.

if I remember correctly the delta force games are voxel based and so more cpu dependant than gpu, so it seems more likely to me that either the cpu or ram are at fault. Try running the prime95 stress test and the memtest on the ultimate boot cd to see which is at fault.

he has just told me, he has already tried Prime95 and the memtest on the CD and it is still playing up...

They did change the graphics engine several times with the delta force series... changed for DF3 LW (land warrior), and changed again for BHD (Black hawk down)...

I had a 9600 non pro that had a passive heatsink on it. It would lock up from heat after about 45 min of play. It didn't matter how intense the graphics were as long as it was a 3D game it would lock up.

I tried to replace the HSF with a home brew massive HSF that I had got from all electronics then modded to fit the card then mounted an 80mm fan on it.

I crushed the core while installing it. A new 9800Pro 128 fixed my lock up problems. I sugest the same solution, and "honey I just killed my video card. should I get another one and try to mod it or pay extra and get one that is fast enough right out of the box?" works as a perfect excuse for a $250 video card!

How much does a 6800GT go for? It may be time to change the HSF on this card!

In all seriousness though. It may be a heat related issue. Try taking the cover off the side of the case and put a 20" box fan or similar in frone of the PC and see if the problem goes away.

Also try a new set of drivers. Some WHQL ones.
