Presario not detecting CDrom drive

I'm working on a computer that belongs to a guy down the hall, he wanted me to format his HDD and reinstall windows. I formated the drive, was unable to get it to boot with my boot disk (win 98 se boot disk) cuz the drive was NTFS. I repartioned it, i formated it, installed 98 to do an upgrade install to Win Xp but now that i'm at the Win 98 stage, it won't detect the CD rom drive. However the Bios sees it , and when i boot with the floppy it detects it as well. but not the actual Windows on the HDD. So if you guys could help. it'd be much appreciated.

It's a Compaq Presario SR1519X. Also the thing can't find the drivers for the USB ports with the cabs from the 98. (not surprising to me, but merely frustrating.) I'm expecting them to be there when i get to the XP stage but to get there i need the CD rom to work. Please Help, Thanks

Can you boot from CD to install XP
(just use the 98 disks or the files on the HDD to autheticate during the install stages/process)

Thats how I used to do an ME upgrade re-install from 98, but all my XP disks have been full rather than upgrade versions.

Have you tried installing the DOS cdrom drivers?

Who knows..win98 hurts my head ..good for it's time and that's about it

As robbie said though, www.bootdisk.com is a great site for any boot problems.

In regards to USB, unless you're running Win98a the USB drivers should be there by default. If not, never fear...the plethora of pr0n available on the net aside it does contain some valuable things:

Drivers for Win98a

Drivers for Win98SE

You should go into the BIOS and set the first boot device as the CDrom. Make sure it is the secondairy master and all jumpers are set correctly. You do not need to install Win98 to use an upgrade disk. Just boot off the CD rom and it will tell you that this is an upgrade version and ask you to install your win98 disk.

Compaq ussually partitions the HDD and then puts a back up of the origonal install on the partition.

If you can boot from the CD Rom with the win98 disk but not the winXP disk then try another CD.

if it's a pirated version of xp, go buy a new copy, install it, and charge him the full price of xp

If it is a Compaq then it came with an OEM corperate version of Windows. The product ID code will be on a sticker on the back or bottom. However, like I said before, Compaq ussually partitions the HDD and then puts a back up of the origonal install on the partition and then they don't send you a disk. If your computer is still under warrenty you can call Compaq and they will send you a disk for around $10 plus $4.95 shipping and handling. Or atleast that was the way it worked about 6 or 7 years ago, not sure now as I haven't bought a Compaq in a long time. You do not need the disk they send you though. You can use any Win XP disk and then use the product ID from the sticker.
