Say goodbye to my PSU...

Well, it happened. I was working at machine #2, and I suddenly smelled burning insulation...I immediately turned off and unplugged it, and I have yet to put a new PSU in, but I *think* everything is OK, since it shut down properly. Well, everything but the PSU.

It was a 430w ThermalTake, and it had a good life. I think I've been using it for 6 years, so it's been in service a while. But it decided to go out in style. No slow degradation of stability for this one, it just pushed over the cliff with the magic blue smoke.

I just hope it didn't take anything with it.

Nothing like going out in a blaze of glory. I salute the valiant power supply that served you well.

Yes, it did serve me well, and despite the blaze of glory it was merciful enough to grant me the time to shut down. I think that that should have minimized the damage, though I won't know until my new TT Purepower 500w comes in tomorrow to replace it.

Power supplies like to be exciting, though. Has anyone ever had their CPU, GPU, HDD, or Mobo spontaneously combust? Maybe a couple, but not near as many as those who have tasted the sharp smell of burning insulation as their PSU begins it's death throes.

Gawd, the smell of burning transistors is especially awful, ugh! I hope you 'pulled the plug' in time!

I do too! I won't know for sure until I put the new PSU in, though. I'm really busy tomorrow, so it may be Saturday before I do it.

I figured it needed a poem, so here's a haiku to all those who have smelled electronic death:

When that pungent scent
Reached my nose the other day
I thought all was lost

Good news/Irrelevant news:

First the irrelevant news. It turns out it was 4 years old, not 6. I confused it with another TT 420 I own that's been sitting in a box because it doesn't have that seperate 4-pin mobo connector.

Good news: Because it's 4 years old, it is covered by TT's 5-year warranty, so I should be getting a brand new 420w PSU eventually. I plan on putting it in Box #3 which has been showing signs of an aging PSU.

Even more good news: Everything is fine. I put in the new PSU, and she's happy as can be. I am typing from it right now.

Yay

Yay! Life is good sometimes, nice to read that you pulled off "the perfect crime," so to speak.

Yeah, I'm worried that my HDD is going to shoot its platters out the side, rupturing a water pipe in my wall, and flood my house. This is too good to be without punishment.....or maybe I'm just lucky, and life will continue as it always has. I won't know unless my HDD does throw a platter, so I'll always have to wear body armor near my computers.

That's great that the PS was still covered by warranty & that it didn't take anything with it!!!
Thanks for the laugh red on the HD patters...LMAO!
I was just picturing it in my mind...this horrible sound and then blam-0!
Out the side it goes into the wall and sticks there half way hanging out of the wall still smoking...haha!!!
