Pentium Thermal Throttling Exploit

Federal Computer Week Online is reporting that security researchers at the CanSecWest/core06 security conference last week announced the existence of a flaw in the thermal throttling technology of Pentium-family CPUs (PIII and up) that would render them vulnerable to a cyber-attack and allow them to be completely taken over by the bad guys; even highly secured systems. The good news? Because of the way MS has implemented certain things in WindowsXP, it would appear to NOT be vulnerable to this attack, according to this blog post entry from one of the people at the conference.

How many more holes are they going to put in the dike before they start taking OUR security seriously?

As many as it takes for us to start demanding security in our systems, would be my guess....

Holes in the dike, i say we keep digging at MS to do something. Is this really ONLINE Security, can it be exploited remotely from over the web?

Another reason for AMD i guess.

If you look at my original post, skool_h8r, you'll see that this is one of the few times where the security hole ISN'T in Windows. It's in the chip itself. Further, because of the way Windows implements the functionality, the hole isn't exploitable in Windows.

MS has plenty of security issues with Windows, but this security issue isn't one of them.

Ok, sorry, i misread it. So holes in the chip itself, it's really not been intel's year, since that AMD lawsuit.

My advice, save your post for a week and re-issue it, bound to be timely and accurate by then...":O}
