8K9A (KT400) 8X AGP driver conflict w/R300

Recently I installed a Tyan Tachyon 9700 Pro, and found whenever I attempted to run 3DMark2001/2003, or graphics intensive programs the screen would simply lock-up, and remain Black. The only way to exit this was to hit the reset button, and reboot. After posting numerous times at Rage3D, I was referred to the following post;

Through reductionistic methodology (he he) I finally determined the problem existed with the KT400's AGP drivers. Initially I uninstalled the VIA 4n1 drivers all together, which ameliorated the crash, unfortunately it was an Ad Hoc remedy.  Luckily the "enthusiast" design philsosophy of Epox offered a fix. I simply Disabled the VLink 8X Support option in the BIOS, and no more crashes/lock-ups. Other fixes hav been to force the AGP from 8X to 4X, although most are finding this feature unaccessable in SmartGart. One way to circumvent this, has been through the use of Powerstrip 3.30; using that utility, to force 4X AGP. Since Powerstrip makes adjustments directly to the videocard's BIOS, whereas most other tweak utilities make changes in Windows registry. I thought perhaps the anomally is the result of some  adverse effect upon the 9700's BIOS via (pun intended) the 4n1 AGP drivers?

I would appreciate any users who have suffered from this affliction, to reply, and describe your experiences, or fixes, please. This may be "Old News" to some, however; as the recent owner of a 9700 pro, i was completely unaware it existed. And had I waited for someone to reply to my posts's in Rage3D, I'd most likely still be troubleshooting. Prior to Disabling VLink 8X Support, when I was attempting to bench in 3DMark2003, I could barely get through the program (with the VIA AGP 3.0 disabled), afterwards the score improved dramatically. Below is my recent 3DMark2003 score;
