Another update
Popped the dimm into dimm slot 3 (the middle one) and ran with 11-3-2-2.5, vdimm@2.6, Vcore@1.65. It worked! No errors in Memtest86 for over 5 hours.

However..

Decided to renstall XP just in case first install had been compromised. No luck. 5 attempts this afternoon due to memory_management and Page-Fault_in_non_paged_Area BSOD's . Furthest one I got was to full install but after installing Nforce 3.13 and rebooting got a corrupted nvatabus.sys error.

memtest still shows no errors . Bumped up Vcore to 1.675 and timing down to 7-3-3-3.5. Still get BSOD's

Got an rma number for the dimm. Will have to wait till Thursday before I get a replacement.

Looking at getting Kingston HYPERX 512MB 433MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2 (2-2-2-6-1) the choice from my preferred supplier is kingston or Corsair (no samsung memory). Course seen posts here that say avoid if Northbridge is C1. Guess which is mine... But had read Corsair House of Help forums and problems with them.

Rock and a hard place anyone?

Another update (hopefully the final one!)

Looks like I did have bad dimm. Got the new Kingston HyperX dimm and put it in Dimm 3. Passed all of Memtest. Installed WinXP with no problems this time and things look good.

Haven't had a chance to install and tweak much else.

Just like to say many thanks to everyone who helped (hope I can return the gesture) and these great forums - much appreciated folks
