AGP problem on 8KDA3+ and Radeon 8500

I hope you guys can help me on this.

I've setup an A64 system consisting of 3000+/8KDA3+ for my fiancee. She doesn't game much so I put in the Radeon 8500 she was using in her old system. The problem is that no set of Catalyst drivers will cooperate with any Nvidia UDP chipset drivers, specifically the GART component.

If I install chipset drivers then put Cats on, I get a really fubar screen once I get past the Windows loading screen, then it says shutting down and locks up. I went backwards chronologically through UDP releases as far as version 3.13 (which uses GART version 3.34 IIRC).

With this everything seemed ok however a quick 3D Mark scored 63xx, and should have been nearer 12k at a guess. I went into Catalyst CP and the SmartGART said AGP speed was off, and wouldn't allow me to switch it back on. I'm guessing the GART version from that release doesn't support the nForce3 250GB?

So in summary, I'm stuck with really low 3D performance. I cannot have both sets of drivers on at once. I thought maybe it's because the card is AGP 4x? If anyone can help me I'll be forever in your debt

Thanks for the reply. Something is definitely up though, as it went through 9k with an XP1800/NF7.

The last card that was in the board was a 9800 XT and that was ok.
