9nda3j shows venice 3000+ as opteron 154

I have a venice 3000+ that keeps bootin up as a opteron 154 even after flashing to lastest bios. Have to use back power switch to boot w/ Antec 350w. The weird thing is that it shows it only has 256k L2 cache in cpu-z and benches that way in Sandra and some memory test I ran. Its dog slow = even w/ my 2500+ barton @ 2.2ghz. Is it possible the CPU could have a bad L2 cache? I really don't care if it shows as a Opteron 154 buts where's my 512k cache?? Should I RMA the 3000+ to newegg, try a different non-antec PS or RMA the 9nda3j?? I am stumped

Here's the cpu-z showing the opteron 154 w/ 256k L2 cache

Venice w/ defective L2 cache??

I don't think that the bios version is the problem here.See if u haven't accidentally disabled L2 cache in bios.I doubt that it will disable only 256 kb of it but give it a try.And also - identufy as Opteron - s940 on a s939 board ?? - wierd

If the BIOS version is wrong, the CPU recognition is wrong.

I flashed it to lastest bios (da3j5401) w/ the magic bios utility. When it still posted as a opeteron 154 w/ 256k cache, I flashed it w/ a boot disc back to the original 2/15/2005 bios it came with. I then flashed it to all the other bioses listed on the site to no avail. Currently w/ the 4/01/2005 bios (that SUPPOSEDLY adds support for venice :-)
Gonna try to take chip to local cpu store and see if they can get it to boot as a 3000+. I think this is a bad 3000+ and AMD should have sold this junk as a Sempron 3100+ or something. Just surprised that I can find noone w/ a venice w/ a bad L2 cache but me :-( Course of all chips I gotten at newegg only 1 or 2 ever oc'd well. This chip is a LBBLE 0517 I believe and goes str8 to 2.35 ghz on default 1.35 volts w/ stock cooler. It needs all 2.35ghz to bench lower than my XP 2500@3200

p01n7e- Couldn't find any bios option to disable the L2 cache. Tried w/ Cool n Quiet on and off no difference.

Cpu store wanted $25 to test the 3000+. No friggin' way!! Its all going RMA back to newegg unless someone has any ideas. New cpu and different mobo that works w/ Antec PS. Any suggestions?

Its definately a dud cpu. Bought a Gigabyte K8NSC-939 to try out the cpu and it would not even boot. Tried to RMA the cpu but AMD consumer web site won't accept my serial number on the chip. Called there tech support site a non 800 number and guess what, even though there supposed to be open today, there down for customer support training. Customer support training to BETTER support me?? By not answering calls during regular business hours
As I sit here on a Athlon classic 700mhz I realized that this WILL be my last AMD purchase.
Blows my mind that a company as large as AMD can't even answer there phones at times they list for service. I can't reach anyone till Monday at the lastest and god knows when and if I will ever get a working Venice 3000+.

Here's the info on this bad cache 3000+ w/ only 256k

Update:
Mobo was fine, even worked w/ both antec powersupplies once got a good chip. Kudos to Epox mobo to even boot the chip.
RMA'd chip to AMD and they came thru BIGTIME! Didn't have any venice chips so they sent me a 4000+ clawhammer as a replacement! Talk about standing by your warranty! AMD has gone above and beyond, They just made me a customer for life. Thxs AMD

Here's the clawhammer, 1mb l2 cache Roxs!!
