The current 80 GB systems don't have full PS2 support. In fact, the $400 model doesn't officially support PS2 games AT ALL, from what I gather (and never has; part of the way they got the cost down was by removing the PS2 compatibility hardware). This system still includes the PS2's GPU, so software emulation allows a fair degree of compatibility. Unfortunately, it still doesn't include the 'Emotion Engine' chip, which allowed for near-perfect PS2 compatibility, but was also part of the reason for the $600 price tag in the first 20 and 60 GB models. When Sony did the first round of cost-reductions on the PS3, they got rid of the 'Emotion Engine' which allowed them to produce the system at less cost. To compensate so that they could keep the price up (and thus reduce their losses) they included a larger hard drive in the 60 GB unit, and thus the 80 GB unit at the $500 price point came to be. The lower-priced unit lost all hardware compatibility with the PS2, but got a 40 GB drive, and a $400 price point. The most recent round of 're-productizing' has resulted in the current 80 GB $400 model, and the virtual disappearance of the $500 model in the U.S. AFAIK. At least, the above is my understanding. Dsio and Pitch probably know this situation better than I do, though. Last edited by Gizmo; 27th October, 2008 at 07:28 AM. |

If you liked Drake's, then you might want to take a look at Tomb Raider: Underworld. Released in about a month from now. bit-tech.net | Preview - Tomb Raider: Underworld Hands-on Preview |

Strongwolf, There's been seven flavours of PS3 so far. The 20GB, which has PS2 support via hardware, but no WiFi or Card Readers. The 40GB, which had no PS2 support, WiFi or Card Readers. The NTSC 60GB, which had PS2 support via hardware, WiFi and Card Readers. The PAL 60GB, is as above, but PS2 support is supported via Software emulation. There's two 80GB models, the first has PS2 software emulation along with WiFi and Card readers, the second has no emulation, WiFi or Card Readers. And then there's the 160GB model, which again, has no PS2 support, WiFi or Card Readers.

I have mine hooked-up to my monitor, but it has a HDMI input. You can get a converter lead which should do it, HDMI to DVI. I've not used one, but I understand they work just fine and are cheap to buy. |

How do you handle sound when you hook up to your PC monitor?

I had to get an audio receiver, for sound in all its glory. This one: HT-SF1100 (HTSF1100) : Home Theatre and hi fi : Sony : United Kingdom That model is discontinued. I have both my PC and PS3 hooked up to it, so works out nicely. Just press a button to switch the sound between the two. I have the PS3 connected via an optical cable. "HDMI for high quality digital sound and picture" - This is a lie. It does not "pick-up" the sound from its HDMI ports. The audio signal does nothing more than pass through the box, to the HDMI out. I was expecting to be able to use that. But, after reading up on this, audio receivers which do take audio from HDMI are more expensive. No big deal because the optical input works just the same. So, a home theater audio receiver is the way to go, with at least one optical in, and whatever other inputs you want for a PC, etc. Mine has 2 optical inputs.

I was hoping I could jack into my PC Sound card or Motherboard sound. I'm Currently using my home threater (Living room /bed room for ) my PS3 connect (Large screen TV and Home Threater sound, older, rather nice system.) Using Optical sound and HDMI for picture. I'm happy enough with the set up, was just wondering what it would take to experiment with using my monitor and PC sound in the computer room...":O} I have 5.1 Logiteck speakers and an HDMI monitor, but the speakers are PC speakers, rather than home theater in my computer room...Thanks Dan!

If your sound card has optical-in, you may be able to do that. No good for me, because I need to switch the PC off when watching movies, otherwise too much fan noise. |
