PS3 Slim announced, official pics.

PS3 Slim is real! And 3.0 firmware update for the PS3 as well! Games rocks!

It looks a total mess.

What is it you don't like exactly?

Lacks the glossy look, but the shape is much the same as the old one.

Sony seems to spend a lot of time on things I have zero interest in...How many links to Sony store should I crave? ":O}

I'm unsure, it just has a real flimsy feel about the whole thing. Having PS3 over Playstation 3 on the cover just makes it look like a bootleg console made in South Asia somewhere!

Is there any news on backward compatibility on the PS3S?

The chief says in the conference video that it is the same as current PS3 models, just smaller. So, I doubt it is backward compatible.

Rumours have it that there's no Linux support and no PS2 compat.
Other than that, the power savings sound good.

Power savings DO look good...I'm concerned about the heat! Price drop is called for, over due, after all they quietly removed quite a bit of functionality last year in terms of USB plugs, Memory card connections and more..I found out when I had to RMA my deluxe unit with backward compatibility with PS2 and got back a rather stripped down exchange model without!!

Sony isn't JUST lowering the price, but the functionality as well, even if you paid for it, you don't get back in RMA deals

With respect to the new console.

The original Playstation 3 was like the Enterprise-E.

This new one is like Red Dwarf. (was the most rubbish spaceship I could think of for comparison purposes)
