Microsoft kills Xbox online game play

No more online gaming for Xbox owners:
Neowin.net - Xbox Live service for original Xbox ends today

Anyone own one?

thankfully not!

I'd be massively pissed if I did. I assume that there are likely to be some people setting up their own online gaming networks

I'm amazed they can legally get away with this! Was this announced when people were buying the first Xboxes?

Thumbs up

Guys its time to move on. Same thing happened with Spectrum 48k. We simply have to move on to better things like X-box 360.

Well not really. If you have a Spectrum which works, all the games will work just the same as they did the day they were released.

So far as I know, the XBox games still work for individual use; it's only the online game-play aspect that has been shut down.

IMO, it's unreasonable to expect MS to maintain those servers from now until the end of time. On the other hand, if you've purchased a game that ONLY works online well then you're screwed and IMO that's just plain wrong. Further, if MS designed the system so that there was no possibility of being able to set up your own server (or going to a non-MS server run by someone else) to play your online game, that's arguably wrong as well.

I'd agree if it was a free service, but Xbox Live is subscription funded.

The PS2 lives on, there are still new releases for it, and Sony is most likely making good money out of it.

Just as well, because it means anyone who can't afford a new HDTV plus PS3, can still get access to some good games on the PS2.
