Unreal Engine 3 ditched Karma and is picking up and using the Aegia API. It'll be the boost it needs imo.

The games need to be optimised to use a Physx Card so it depends on the game.

AIUI the way the PhysX card is currently implemented it won't increase your FPS, but will enable you to have more eye-candy via an extra level of detail that is only available if you have a PhysX card installed. Of course, having this extra detail will cost your FPS rate a little.

If anything it'll actually decrease your FPS.

lol. Let's put it this way...i don't have enough slots for this card in my system, but that doesn't stop me from pulling the TV tuner to play these games w/ it installed. haven't noticed any drops...actually splintercell and Vegas play BETTER with it. U3 engine has support built in it for Phys-X from day one. But if your ysstem is not top-end, yes, having a phys-X can make you system slower, as it puts a bit of load on the vidcards. My rig is cpu-limited, not gpu-limited, and is part of teh reason I used am e6600 rather than a QX6700.

OK they have a few nice horses in their stables, are Physics cards going to win any races as far as widespread adoption goes? To early to say?

What about price? Is that coming down any time soon?

Price dropped a while back. You've got to understand that Physics cards only seem to be a add-in...and with truly "UNIFIED" DX10 cards, not needed @ all, as the second vidcard or idle cycles on the gpu(geo shader) can be used for physics calculations(enter Havok Physics).

But ya got to have a dx10 card with low pixel granularity in order for using the vidcard to be effective....and the top Dx10 card now, the 8800GTX, has a 32-pixel granularity....meaning you essentially only have a 4-pipe unit(8-pipe in FP16, shaders are FP32/FP16, and there's 128 of them). this means that load-balancing on this G80 gpu is not very efficient, nor does it come without a price.Currently the G80 is not useful at iall for htis as the pixel shader must hand it's work off through the ROP, and cannot directly send data to another shader for true "STREAM" computing.

This simple fact is what is holding Physics acceleration ATM. We will be seeing more and more physics simulation in games in the near future, however it's not likely to be wide-spread until DX10 comes along and truly allows developers to interact with GPU's without the interference of a driver or API not made specifically for thier app. Low-level programming is what it is going to take to make things work right, and you'll notice that neither AMD nor nVidia have been very forth-coming with info in regards to this subject. At least Ageia is "out there" in the market, making thier presence felt....

It's really a big issue..IMHO. you really have to balance ssytem resources properly when building such a system...no more "buy the parts adn toss tem together" scenarios going on in this house any more. I'm a bit sick of buying 4 complete rigs just to get the parts to build one good one!

So, Phys-X cards are usefull..not jsut for games, however this is not the casual gamer, nor the casual purchase. the Phsy-X isn't really a single core either, but more akin to the Cell!
