I saw something similar a few years back. That basically a large steel speaker that you screwed to the back of your sofa. When an explosion or whatever happened it acted like a subwoofer, only it moved your sofa around, rather than moving air

It is that. This mounts to your gaming chair though. Sounds fun though

I didn't realise - the review didn't actually explain what it is / what it does too well. As I sit on a gymnastic ball at the PC, this thing is really of limited use to me!

so from what i'm understanding of it. it's basically a pneumatic hammer that hits your seat using the signals from your sound card. right?

It is a sub woofer that has a weight on it instead of a speaker cone. The bass frequencies are routed through the crossover and move the weight in response to the sound that would be generated. This creates an impact. There is a pass through for your sub so you still get the sound and the impact.

I thought it had a motor with an eccentric cam and weight arrangement? (At least, that's what the pic looked like to me, but it's kinda hard to tell what is inside that plastic housing.)

In principle, this should be pretty easy to build as a homebrew project.

I will look again. I might be thinking of the older model.

EDIT:
If you look at the specs it is 2 ohms and list a freq response and has a 100 watt amp. Makes me think it is a speaker.

Hmm........could still be a rotary motor, although it could also be what we refer to as a 'linear motor', also known as a speaker voice coil.

I think that is it. A voice coil. I was at a loss for the term...

That is seriously geeky. And frankly I don't want to be kicked up my butt every time I fire my gun!

Unless you have a desire to go out picking fights with Mike Tyson that needs an alternative to cure it, this butt kicker seems pointless to me!

It could be fun for one of those post night out drinking events. Where you catch out one of your unsuspecting friends and generally confuse the hell out of them thinking someone is kicking there chair

There's also the Clark Synthesis Tactile Sound Transducers, which do a similar thing to the ButtKicker.
