What's most important to you in a laptop? Processing power? Battery life? Hard disk space? Weight?

For me it's definately battery life and weight (and lack of clutter!), which is why I'm typing this on a 700MHz PIII based machine, with a battery that lasts 3 hours.

A 1.6GHz P4 built on 0.13u probably doesn't consume much more power than a 700MHz P3 puilt on 0.18u, the performance of that P4 is probably close to the performance of a P3 1.13GHz . . .

A Celron P III P4 it does not matter.. As long as it's not above $2,000 but the ones I provided here I like.. A Few of them like the Toshiba have a built in Smart Media reader.. that would be great for my digital camera.

You're all over the place Mike! When you gonna get the home machine working?? That would seem to be priority, then address the laptop thing when you have the funds (prices change a lot in a few month's time in the PC industry, you know that ).

I'm typing on a 650PIII Toshiba Satellite, and I must say i think it's a POS. the Li Ion battery works for about a half hour now(only charged maybe 50 times), keyboard doesn't work right anymore. it's bulky..screen kinda sucks..feels like it's cheap plastic. I prefer IBM personally.

For laptops, especialy for students, i tell them DELL, mainly because of their reliability and warrenty. But the toshiba celeron and p3/4 are nice too.

Do NOT get the Vaio. You would not believe the battery time. 15 minutes tops before it shuts off. I couldn't believe it either.

Yup, 15 minutes. I didn't notice it at first because I was always using it plugged to an outlet. Then I went away on a business trip and wanted to use it on the plane. While playing a DVD, it lasted about 10 minutes. I thought maybe the battery wasn't charged. When I got to the hotel, charged it up and just did some spreadsheet work. 15 minutes later, I get the dead battery beep. It's been that way ever since. Maybe a Vaio with an Intel chip is better...

On one of those Apple laptops, you can watch almost the whole movie. But seriously, Sony has to do something about the battery life for the Athlon Vaios. I think the Intel Vaios are better though since the CPU sucks up less power and also Intels have that throttling function which clocks your CPU down when you're doing less intensive stuff.

Sony does not use the step-down function like dell and suck- that means the battery has to power the sucker at full load instead of at 60%

So I'm better off getting the Labtop with the Intel Cpu as it's power functions are better?

If you need to use your laptop for extended periods away from a power source, an Intel laptop would be better than one with an AMD chip. Seriously, until they fix this power drain thing, I'm never getting another AMD CPU laptop. I might consider one of those sexy Apple laptops, but I think I'll have problems running all my software on it.

I'm not sure about that actually. The fan on my Athlon laptop is always running. I wouldn't think though, that the power used by a fan is anything compared to the power used by the CPU.
