Review: TomTom XL

I have recently had to purchase a GPS due to work demands. After wading through countless models, I made my decision.

There are thousands or GPS units on the market today with equally as many futures available on different models. Features of a GPS today include everything from photo viewer, spoken street names, music player, Bluetooth and even an FM transmitter.

See the complete review here.

This is the one I have:
Sony nav-u NV-93T (new toy - photos)

Had to rule out Tom Tom just because they don't have maps for where I live.

Bluetooth can be a pain because you have to be sure that your GPS and phone are fully compatible. I bought both at the same time, to ensure that they both work with each other.

Yeah, there are so many horror stories here in Aus. Telstra (countries biggest Telco) have their own specific network called NextG. Anyway, NextG phones (regardless of model) their bluetooth only functions with a GPS as a hands free. It doesnt allow you to use your phone book or anything like that.

The TomTom has great maps for Aus, in MOST situations, not counting the new freeway near where I live. It thinks I'm driving through a paddock! LOL.

Got Patti one a while back, a Garmin, very useful item to have! Gets fairly constant use from us.

I installed Google maps on my Black Berry. Although it's not the most accurate of my location it's helped me out here and there getting around traffic and such.

Yeah, that's pretty cool,... but with Patti's Garmin I can track God through the heavens...if it isn't to over cast! ":O}

A pal uses an econo-model, can't remember the brand. He futzes with it constantly, dunno if I could drive safely with all of the menu changes that seem to be needed. Works pretty well when it doesn't freeze up. Looks like road maps will become extinct soon enough.
