new drivers = lower benches?

I just installed the newest VIA 4in1 drivers from their web-site on my Epox 8KHA+ board. At the same time, I installed the latest ATI drivers for my Radeon 32DDR board. I then re-benchmarked my system with 3DMARK 2001. My scores dropped by 70 points.
I am not sure if the problem is the ATI or the VIA drivers?
If I had any brains, I would have done them one at a time and benched each to see what was happening.
Anyone have any info on this or any similar experiences? Thanks
Mike

I seriously doubt it was the ATI drivers. I think with XP I left the VIA drivers alone when I installed. On new / custom builds I usually install the 4.32 drivers 'cause I know they work fine with everything I ever install.

hum?

Well then what do you suggest? I know it has to do with one of them for sure. I am running 98SE so I don't have that problem with the drivers issue and using the XP drivers.
I am at a loss. Guess I can go back and re-install the old stuff one at a time and see which one it is but what a bunch of nonsense. Mike

When I optimize the Vidcard driver for BM "X," I lose points from BM "Y." Happens every dang time. For reasons unknown to me, OpenGL performance is invariably moiderized by updating the driver for my GF256. This was true with a TNT, too.

You might boot into Safe Mode, then remove all the drivers for your Vidcard--leave Windows's basic driver alone. Upon reboot, Win should ask for the driver. Choose the right one this time. Good luck.

Use the 98/me drivers, not the NT/XP/W2K ones.

By "right driver" I meant the version of nVidia "reference" driver that Pinky recommended.

Question

To be honest, I get better performance with the 4n1's that came on the CD driver disk that came with the mobo. I believe these are v4.32's. I tried the 4.37's and did get a unstability problem. I went removed these drivers and tried the 4.32's and all is well. Also in Sandra 2002 Pro, I get HD benchs at 24000 + & - but steady. With the 4.37's this was about 23000 and quite a lot of difference on each run. But I am running Win98se and not XP

To began with I was using the Win98se drivers that installed be default and they were quite good. There are some other drivers on this CD setup disk besides the 4n1's that really must be installed for the system to perform up to par.
