Kyro II vs MX400

hey peeps.

i'm currently running an mx400, but have the opportunity to buy a kyro II for a helluva cheap price tomorrow. would this be a worthwhile upgrade?

kyro II owners.. what are they like?

thanks,

I'm not sure exactly how well the K2 performs, my Dad bought one and tells me it isn't much faster in 32bit than his V3 3000 was in 16bit. I do know that there are GPU voltage mods about for it that will let you overclock it and the syncronized memory beyond 200MHz.

If memory serves the K2 uses tile rendering and hidden surface removal, no?

The kyro does use tile based rendering and hidden surface removal. Plus I beleive it can do single pass 8x multi texturing.
The kyro doesn't have TnL but with a fast enough processor it's comaprable to a geforce 2 let alone the mx

Which means that by the time we all help Paul get the card to 220MHz, he should have some killer frame rates, right?

Paul, you still have your Peltier and Waterblock yes??? I can see a frost covered Kryo already, so you had better stock up some closed cell foam

The only people I recomend the mx to is those with slower cpu's, but even then the cpu may still hold them back quite a bit. I've got a friend with a p2 333 who I told to get an mx because he couldn't afford much of an upgrade, and at first it was great but in more recent games it's started being quite slow such as max payne, I'll have to get him to let me oc it

Proze/All..

Saw this post and I couldn't resist...(Disclaimer: This is not an official "Benchmark" Just some fun to see what happens w/ two different systems and cards)

I have a 3DProphet 4500 and a Visiontek MX400 so I decided to run some tests and see what I could offer. Overall, I agree w/ Phil, If you've got a fast CPU, go w/ a Kyro 2. If not...

Note, I left the cards in different systems to give you and idea of the performance differences/requirements.

Setups:

Abit KT7AR (no Raid)
Athlon 1.33 @ 1.53 (11.5x133)
3D Proph. Kyro 2 w/ latest Power VR drivers (w/ DirectX Fix)
Kyro OC'ed to 183/183 from 175/175
Single 256Meg Micron DIMM
Win98se

Epox 8KTA3
Duron 850 @ 1040 (10x104)
Visiontek MX400 w/ Det 21.81
MX OC'ed to 210/161 from 200/150
2 Generic 128Meg DIMMS
Win98se

Okay onto the benchs..sorry for the multiple posts..not trying to hog bandwidth!! When I get some time..I'll swap the two and we'll see the difference.

thanks for the thoughts so far, gents!! much appreciated!

as long as i'm not down-grading (is there such a word?!), i'm happy. i won't lose money on the deal at all if i sell my mx afterwards.. in fact i'll make a bit.

jimbo.. thanks for the benchies. what are your findings in the "real" world? i.e. in games, and not just benchies?

keep those opinions coming! the hour draws near where i'll have to make a decision!

Also I would like to add to this there is a know bug with 3d mark 2001. Mad onion has fixed it and it will be out with the next patch. It also holds the K2 score back around 500 or more points. I upgraded from my geforce sdr to this and wow what a butt kicker. ESP good in everquest. Dont know if you all play eq but since the kyro only renders what you can see the "lag" everyone else has you see none of. For instance eq has many many moving trees that requires people to turn of the 3d sky turn down the clip plane and particle effects. But with this kyro I have all settings maxed and up from 640 by 480 (default) to 1024 by 768. Best of luck on your choice.

EQ was originally written to take full advantage of 3DFX's Voodoo chips. The engine was written with Voodoo optimisations in mine, and hence doesn't perform wonderfully well with other cards. I've seen Voodoo 1 cards performing as well as Geforce 2 GTS cards in EQ!

However, Shadows of Luclin is using a different engine which is Direct3D optimised, so results may well be different. (;

I'm not a hardcore gamer so most of my gamming right now is online HL. The only game that I've noticed "issues"..ie..lower frame rates with was a real big UT map w/ a lot of players..but that was before I had the Athlon so I really need to do some more testing.

Overall..I think the card was very much worth the money. I want to do a voltage mod to the card but I'm having a hard time finding a 18kohm resistor locally..gotta order one online.

Good luck on your final decision!

well, a mate said he'd buy the mx off me if the kyro was cool, so i bought it. hehe.. the princely sum of ZAR650 (/9=$72), and i'll sell the mx so i won't be losing anything! all the benchmarks i could find said the kyro was quicker than the mx in everything, so i'm sure it's been worthwhile.

haven't had time to install it yet, but will do so tomorrow. i'll let y'all know how it turns out.
