9800 pro to xt mod will not register 8x!!!!

Hey everyone, I recently purchased a Sapphire 9800 pro video card with 128mb ram and 256bit. I flashed the bios to an XT and everything is running fine. The flash jumped my core clock to 398.3 and memory clock to 351. I had to change the memory aperture size in my BIOS to 256 in order to get the thing to work properly. I do have a voltage regulator for the agp card, but don't really know what it needs, that is if I should give it more juice or not. The problem is that with SP2 AGP support the latest Catalyst drivers don't recognize my card as 8X it displays off in SMARTGART referencing speed. My motherboard is running the VIA KT400 chipset and when I went to download the latest 4 in 1 chipset drivers from their website it told me that when I install AGP Chipset drivers I should use the SP2 standardized drivers instead of theirs. However, like I said ATI drivers don't recognize the AGP speed of the card and when I did load the VIA chipset AGP drivers my system freaked out and I had to uninstall them. One thing that you should know as well is that I have my CPU overclocked. When I set bios settings to default the VIA AGP drivers worked fine and it showed in SMARTGART that the AGP speed was 8X, but when I overclocked my processor I could not use the VIA drivers, so here I am stuck again. Can anyone help me figure out what would be the best performance settings in the BIOS or in the video card drivers for my machine???? Please help me. I ran 3DMark03 and scored 5829 with the current settings, but it seems that I can do better. Help me!!!

Here is a run down of my system hardware and software:

-Chieftech case, acrylic blue with window, (very cool)

-Chaintech motherboard, Apogee 7VJL Deluxe, supports 333FSB processors with VIA KT400 Chipset, AGP 8X, DDR 400.

-AMD Athlon XP 1700+ B-Core with FSB OC'D and multiplier OC'D, base speed 1.47GHz OC'D 2.32GHz (166FSB X 14 Ratio)

-Aftermarket heatsink SLK-800 Copper, (works great) with a blue LED fan on heatsink (nice looking)

-1 GIG PC2100 (266MHz) RAM (2 X 512MB) (Note: I tried PC2700 modules, however they would not overclock as well, so I went with the PC2100 instead)

-Maxtor 120GB 7200RPM 8MB Buffer IDE hard drive. (works good, however when I upgrade my mobo I plan to switch to SATA drives)

-Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 PRO Video card with 128MB DDR and 256Bit.
Installed Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer with Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.

-I have a big case with plenty of cooling, 2 X 80mm intake fans and 2 X 80mm outtake fans, plus power supply fan and vga cooler fan.

Anyone who has suggestions on how to increase performance and/or figure out why my card is not reading 8X please let me know.

Thanks, Steve

Oh, I forgot I also have a 450Watt power supply. In case this makes a difference to anyone. I am also running a 3 1/2" floppy, lite-on 16x DVD ROM and NEC Dual Layer DVD R/RW Drive.

Thanks, Steve

I am not exactly sure which bios I used. I found a link from a forum and read a huge article about how to do it. I believe that I did it right and I think I flashed it with the bios that matches my memory chips. I have been hearing about the R350 and R360 cores and was wondering how I would determine which one mine is?? Can I look at the card without having to take the Cooler off of the chipset. I bought my card off of ebay and the previous owner is the one who put the VGA Silencer on the card. Can I check the core in ATI Tool?? Let me know if you know of a better bios to use. I still have the floppy with my old bios on it and the new xt one, so I am assuming that I could flash it back to a 9800pro.

Thanks, Steve

Hello, I just checked in ATI Tool and it looks like I have the R360 core. Just thought this info may be of some use.

Thanks, Steve

Did you go into the bios setup and make sure 8x agp is enabled? Just a thought!

You will have to take the cooler off to be 100% certain you have a R360 core.

Hopefully you are not in the same boat as I am. I have a MSI radeon 9800pro, took the cooler off, it is R360. No amount of tinkering will allow me to flash it to XT and boot my PC.
