6600GT (PCI-X)

Both seem to be in the same ballpark, pricewise... Which would be a better performer? I have an AGP system now, but am looking to go A64 in the near future. If PCIx pricing makes them a better deal, I'll wait on the mobo's.
The 6600GT is a much better performer.

You could always take a gamble a try flashing a 9800se into a 9800pro.

Yup. I got 5104 on 3DMark03. In 3DMark05, I got 1012. I'll get a little higher once I go dual channel. If I turned off FAH I could probably get a little more too.

When it comes to higher resolutions (above 1024x768) and newer games like Doom3 I wish I had a 6600 GT instead of my 5900 (20-40fps difference). In 1024x768 and regular games (UT 2004)they would perform in the same range.

There is an agp version of the 6600GT (the pci bridge chip used on the 6800's also works in reverse) so the 5900XT isn't even a choice, even the 5950ultra is outperformed by the 6600GT

No need to gamble when you can use the softmod drivers from
http://www.omegadrivers.net/
which do the mod in software so if it doesnt work you just uninstall

Thanks, I noticed an AGP version, and as mooky stated, there is a huge price premium on it. I hope it is supply and demand, and the price of AGP will come down... I'm thinking it's time to try something different, and the 6600XT should fit the bill. It's a good thing I'm not in a rush.

save the money for an X800 or 6800...really..remember that teh np9600 i had changed to a 256mb 9800pro...and i want more yet.

But i must say, i have every option at the max in HL2...as well as 6xAA 16xAF, and although i have hit low 20's the odd time, it was only for a few frames(like 5-6, maybe), so it depends on what you want it for...although these framerates are ok for playing a single player game, they do not work for online gaming at all.

Talking

Hi all,

I am looking at getting a new card myself, and personally, am looking at the BFG Nvidia 5700/5800 OC with 256mb DDR(2 or 3)...

If you are looking at getting an Nvidia card, go for the BFG range. They are just starting to filter into the UK (1 store in the whole of UK sells em so far (PCWorld)).

The BFG card are already overclocked, but they are supposed to have great overclocking potential with some of the cheaper cards with a total clock speed of over 1ghz.

Although I would seriously recommend the 6600 or the 6800 chipsets, they beat ATI chipsets head over heals, and have always come out on top in the reviews over here.

Hope this helps.

yep ATI would better for this choice unless you have stereoscopic glasses which in turn is 100% compatible with the nvidia drivers.

Get the 6600GT, much faster in heavy Pixel Shader 2, like Far Cry and HL2. Faster than a 5900 Ultra and sometimes faster than a Radeon 9800XT. The 6600GT is one of the best choices in the mid range, well.. maybe the better. Soon i will get one too

if you don't want to mod your card then the 6600gt is the best choice for it's price and theres an agp version so that gives nvidia a big advantage over ati in this price bracket, plus the card is faster than the x700 range
If your willing to give modding a go though the 6800 or 6800LE offers the best value, better than anything ati offers, only the memory is the problem with these cards because it's only 700mhz by default and only usually overclocks into the 800's but even still it offers far more bandwidth than the 6600gt because that only has a 128bit bus

Good News, it seems that mfgrs have caught on and are releasing AGP versions of the 6600GT. There are 5 or 6 different cards running AGP, and the price seems to be coming down a bit, in the 210-240 range. Hopefully, with the new year, sub $200 will be common so I can look into snagging one or two.

I have a FX5950Ultra 256mb, And I am more than happy with that card, however i think it is well above the $150 mark

I am after a decent overclocking proggy if anyone can point me in right direction, plus I also wanna flash update the card, it is the ASUS 9980Ultra if that helps

Cheers

I'm not sure about 100, but it is a much cheaper card than the GT. It uses much slower ram, standard DDR, and the GPU is much slower as well. It is annoying that they even use the same name.
