X800 XT PE > 6800ultra *scores inside*

Due to a mishap while modifying my water cooling setup, my X800 has departed this life. Since I am a hardcore gamer, I cannot live without a working vid card. So, I picked up an eVga 6800ultra at my local computer store. These are my thoughts:
BFG isn't the only company to OC their cards. Mine came clocked at 425/1100. That is a 25mhz OC on the core. Nice move by eVga, but not enough to save the ultra from the XT PE. The heatsink is cool looking, but it was a stupid retarded idea to have it exhausting hot air from the core into my case.
In benching, I experiemented with 3 driver sets. The 66.93, 67.22, and 71.20. The 71.20s were the fastest.
6800ultra(425/1100)
3dm03 - 13,384
3dm05 - 5,604
AM3 - 78,000

Those seem like really good scores until you look at what it's competitor scores.

X800 XT PE(520/1120) Omega4.12betas

3dm03 - 13,604
3dm05 - 6,115
AM3 - 81,000

I wasn't surprised that the XT won in the 3dmark benches. I WAS surpised that it won by so much. I thought the performance difference was much smaller. I was very very surpirsed that the XT is faster in AM3. I had believed that NV40 cards ruled that benchmark.
So there it is. All settings on my computer were the same. The only changes were the vid cards. In my opinion, the 6800ultra isn't worth the money. It is considerably slower than the XT PE.

My advice to anyone looking at a high end card is to bypass the 6800ultra and go for the XT PE.

Unless you want SM3.0...which looks real cool...try farcry v1.3....

I think the 6800gt is the card for bang for buck.

sm3 doesnt visually enhance farcry its used for performance reasons
if you go for a top end card then ati do win, and I think with this generation of cards 3dc will be a much beter advantage than sm3
but for those that eat in resteraunts that print the prices on the menu, the other 6800's and te 6600's are the much better choice.
The 6800GT is a better card than the x800pro, offering the full 16 pipelines, and the 6800 and 6800LE are great value cards, especially as modding them to 16 pipelines is often possible

I think the new X800 Xl might just steal the bang for buck award. Over $100 cheaper than a 6800gt, no external power supply and a full house of 16 Piplelines, this might be one to watch.

One thing I neglected to mention is that, I bought the 6800ultra to hold me over until I get my XT back from RMA. I'll be ebaying it once I get my XT back.

Bang for the buck wasn't a consideration for me. Top of the line performance was. The 6800ultra outperforms everything except the XT PE. And since XT PE's are almost impossible to find(no one in Colorado Springs has them) I bought the one that was top of the line and that I could get immediately.

As much as I can get. I'd like to recoup as much of the cost as possible. I'll probably start the bidding at $350 and have buy it now set for $500.

the 6800Ultra is not the top of the line nvidia. Nvidia declared their 6800 ultra extreme to be top of the line

6800GT = 350/1000
6800U = 400/1100
6800UE = 450/1200
UEs are around in very short supply, from what ive heard xtPEs arnt in *huge* numbers either.

i had the chance to use one for a demonstration show a month ago so despite rarity they do infact exist.

next thing is just about everybody knows that 3dmark has been useless for quite some time now as an objective performance measure in terms of 3dcards. for cpu testing 2001SE is still great! but the newer ones have already attained a very poor reputation.

aquamark however is a reasonable choice for benching and i see your point with the performance disparity, however with UE speeds, im sure it would be nill.

If you are a hardcore gamer and looking for current TOP END performance try looking up futuremarks hall of fame and see what the top 10 systems in each 3dmark version are using for a 3dcard. all 6800's in SLI mode.

compare the PE to the UE for top single card and look at the SLI setups is you are talking about top end performance because thats where it is.

As far as nvidia / ati i love ati and have an x800pro modded to XT in my backup machine. my main machine uses a 6800GT at over ultra extreme speed. i paid less for that than i did for my system memory and despite alot of people calling me "nvidiot" for buying it i love the thing.

is there a difference between the x800s and 6800s that you can see with your eyes and not with semi-accurate easy to cheat benchmarks? well if there is i havnt found it yet. if you buy a 6800 you will get an insanely fast card with power to burn, if you get an x800, ditto.

its a matter of personal preference not symbols like ">" "<" "="

I forgot about the UE.
Here's my reasoning: The XT PE in general performs slightly better in D3D while the ultra performs noticably better in OpenGL. I believe that D3D titles outnumber OpenGL at this time. The XT PE also performs signifcantly better in synthetic benchmarks. That makes the XT PE the better card, it has better D3D perfromance and better synthetic benching capabilities.

In gaming I can't tell a difference. Battlefront looks and feels the same at 16x12 4xAA/8xAF as did my X800. I just want my 15k 3dmarks!

Why do my scores plummet when OCing with coolbits? At stock, I get my 13,300 3dmarks. At 459/1200 I get 12,200? AM3 also drops into the mid-60K range.

mate i get what you mean, i used to and still do love posting high end 3dmark scores to make people with old / cheap equipment feel bad about themselves I think a 3dcard is one of those things you really have to have for a while before you can tune it to its peak.

The reason i kind of snapped at you is because i get 14,000 on the exact same cpu that you have running at default clock speed (2Ghz as opposed to your 2.7Ghz), almost same memory (in terms of speed and the extra 1Gb is useless for 3dmark at least), and a 6800GT that at the time was clocked almost exactly the same as your 6800Ultra.

I didnt get a score that high because im lucky, ive got it because i know my card inside and out after using and tuning it (and trying the 10 beta drivers nvidia releases each week). similarly im sure you know your x800 backwards by now and can get the most out of it. Given the fact that your first post has a 13,xxx score and in your sig you have a 14,xxx and now you talk about a 15,xxx i can see that you must be learning more about your card as you go and have it close to peak tuning by now.

the 6800U and the X800XT-PE are both awesome cards and i think its the post title that got me upset more than what you said, next time just remember that there are starving kids in africa playing CS:S on an FX5200

PS. that last OC you mentioned is going a bit far unless you have a very lucky card 6xxx cards dont crash on bad OCs like many others, they drop frames and have momentary pauses that can be under a fraction of a second long(or several seconds). could be why your score sucks when OCed.

get to know your 6800 and you may not want to part with him after all

I'm glad you get my meaning, I DO like my 6800. It's cool to get a break from the X800 and try something new. I WILL get it post uber high benchies! I haven't used an nVidia card since my Geforce 2 GTS(w/64mb!) was the fastest card on the planet. I'm not famaliar with ins and outs of it, so maybe I was a bit unfair in my initial judgment of it.

I aplogize to anyone I upset. I wasn't trying to diss nVidia or insinuate that the 6800s suck.

*edit* after playing around all afternoon, I got to 13,471 in 3dm03 with the 71.20 drivers.

GregP24 - did you flash you 6800 Ultra to a Extreme and how stable is it?

It's a pity my PNY 6800 Ultra isn't overclock friendly because it starts to have an impact with image quality. I get white dots and odd colours, once I've reset the clocks it's perfect.
