Sound card upgrade

Is it worth upgrading to a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live 7.1 from my onboard audio AC97 that's on my Epox 8RDA+ ??

What will I gain? Apart from a headphone and mic socket?

Cheers.

yis your onboard only 5.1? if so then you will gain 2 more channels
you may also see a slight performance increase in games due to the soundblaster not being as cpu reliant but this I am not possitive of.

Yes it's only 5.1.

No massive gain then I take it.

unless 7.1 appeals to you then thats correct. The soundblaster will probabally have better analogue to digital converters so if you record audio into your pc there will be some improvement there but on the whole onboard sound is more than good enough for most people, and if your were to use a sound card I would recomend a better upgrade than just a soundblaster, I would recomend a 7.1, 24bit/96khz capable card from someone like m-audio or terratec

Thanks, I'm no audiophile so I guess I'll save my £25.00 then. Games sound ok to me.

Soundblaster generally has bad sound quality. Soundblaster cards definately aren't as good as SoundMAX onboard sound, and there are many soundcards that have better quality audio.
