Whats SM3?

BTW: No one answered my first question, call me a n00b but, AGP and PCI-E appear to have similar sockets. Are they cross-compatible?

ooh no they're not cross compatible lol, that would be fun to try to force it, as long as you like to burn cash.

I think there are some adapter cards that you can insert in the agp slot and insert your pci-e video card on that thing.

SM3 = Shader Model 3.0 (Vertex and Pixel Shader 3.0), which is currently only supported by NVIDIA's 6800 series cards and not by ATI's X800 line of cards. (quote from AnandTech's FarCry v1.2 SM3.0 Path Analysis, Date: July 2nd, 2004)

Do the X850's support SM3?

nope. maybe next generation. When overclocked to the same speeds, an x800 will perform better than a x850, so you might want to keep this in mind.

we could ask pitch to give it a go. He has had an X850 for a month or so now and hasnt killed it yet. I think he could be out of ideas.

A bridge wouldn't be impossible, the only problem would be fitting it inside the case with the added height
