Aureal Vortex and XP SP2

I got fed up with the lame onboard sound on the motherboard so I raided my second machine which has (had) an Aureal Vortex 8330. Put it in, installed the XP drivers and all seemed fine. Started to play a game and the sound wasnt on. Went back to desktop, no sounds . If i uninstall the device in hardware manager, then refresh it reinstalls and sound works for a while, then stops. The card works perfect in the other machine, and all connections etc are fine on the new one (even tried other PCI slots that run other cards fine). Speakers are fine too. I have noticed that games run jerkilly now as well.

The only thing is the new machine runs SP2 of XP, whereas the older one is just vanilla SP1 (no updates at all - its not connected to the internet).

Anyone have any experience with the AV cards and SP2 XP?

The system is nothing special, 2400+ XP Athlon, MSI KT400 MoBo, GeForce4.
