5500 Fx Any Good?

Hi people,
ive been offered the chance to get a new graphics card quite cheap.
its a geforce 5500fx 256mb, i know they are far from the best around, but at the mo i have a geforce4 mx 440 128 mb.

would i notice much of an improvement in gaming if i up graded?

It would be a fair leap over the GF4MX, especially in games with shader support as the MX doesn't have hardware shaders

All depends on how cheap

If it's less than £25, bargain. The MX series are really behind it and have been for a while.

the way things stand at the mo i have about £50 for a new one, possible 70.

I was looking at this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...00_Series.html
the 256 at bottom of page, would be about 60 with delivery.

any thoughts

The 6200's are only like 45 lbs. (dunno if that's right) so why not spend 70? Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe games that require 256mb of video card memory won't be playable on a 6200. Save some cash and get the 128mb version.

45lb's!!! I certainly hope not

You're right theres no point what so ever going for 256mb on a 6200, in fact you are probably just holding the overclock back slightly, and memory performance on 6200/6600 is a real bottleneck

If you can muster £70 the you can get yourself a 6600, which once overclocked really are good performers

No, I meant money wise lol. How would you say that without the actualy sign for English currency or how do you type the sign for a (pound?), the money one? And yes, get a 6600 if you can.

I'm assuming ur on AGP as your current card is a MX. If you have £70 knocking around i'd get a 6800! http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...orce_6800.html

There's a few 6800's on there that are -£70.

Those are the 6800LE's and are 70 ex. VAT, so he can't afford that. And I think he mentioned 70 is stretching it, no?

Ah good point!

Then maybe the 6200 would be the best choice given the budget. But i personally wouldn't settle for a card that didn't do directx9.0 or support SM2 at least right now. Going for a previous generation card will mean he's stuck with directx8 shader support but an overal faster card, aka fast graphics but it just won't look as pretty. If you could get at least a 9800 on the cheap (one that could be softmodded to an XT, Google it as i'm not familiar with softmodding, i've only ever had nVidia cards, never used ATi) try eBay they're going for about £50 for the 128MB versions.

Can anyone flesh out the pros and cons of getting a 9800 compared to a 6600?

Oh n if u decide to get that 5500FX then offer no more than £30, these cards retail at £35. I'd definately haggle the price down, unless he knows some mug that will give him £35-£40 for the card he'll probably give in if you stand your ground. (offer him a free pint, haggling with pints is always a sure fire way to cheaps-ville, that is if ur 18 or over of course!)

The advantage of a 9800 over a 6600 is memory bandwidth, as it has more than double the bandwidth, so higher resolutions, and FSAA are far better on a 9800 over the 6600

But the 6600 wins on pixel shading and raw speed once overclocked, at roughly 25% more power plus support for SM3 making it a far better choice for future graphics engines such as unreal3 and quake4, which I'd guess a 6600 will just about manage

yeah you guys have made my mind up, i'll give the 5500fx a miss.
If needs be i can always wait a month or so and get abit more £!
But ive never been very good at waiting.

are the 6800LE in the above link very overclockable? and wot does LE mean?
I take it the GT's are the best, so where does the LE fall in comparison?

Oh wow, the 6800LE, if you're lucky, can be an amazing graphics card. It can be opened up to 16 pixel pipelines and 6 vertex shaders. I'm pretty sure it's rather overclockable as well. If you can save up for it, that's a stellar choice right there.

After checking the prices recentally I'd give the LE the thumbsup over a 6600 unless every penny counts
By default it will be slightly faster than a 6600 thanks to memory bandwidth, the core won't overclock as much, a 6600 does 500mhz+, a 6800LE 350-450mhz, but it also holds the possibility of unlock extra pipelines giving it the performance of a 6800 or even a 6800GT

Yeh it's all luck of the draw with the 6800's. IF you can afford a 6800 [not LE] (bit more expensive than the 6800LE). Then you will be garunteed a card that's better than a 6600 at stock and has the chance of going to almost stock GT speeds (with 16pipes and 6 vertex pipes unlocked).

The 6800LE is basically a GPU that didn't pass the requirements for the GT/ultra cards (either it can't achieve the high clock speed, or it has defective pipelines) The gpu gets the defective pipes masked, and/or the clock is set to around 300mhz.

6800LE's have 8pixel pipes and 4 vertex pipes (can, but not always be unlocked to 16pipes and 6 vertex pipes)
6800's have 12pipes and 5 vertex pipes (can, but not always be unlocked to 16pipes and 6 vertex pipes)

The 6800's are a safer bet but usually are slightly more expensive as they already have a garunteed 12x1 5vp and can get the full 16x1 6vp.

I was one of the increasingly fortunate people to get a fully unlockable 6800LE for £100 a few month ago. My card only unlocks to 370mhz clock and 800mhz memory but it's good enough for the games that i play!
