no AGP 4x

With my Radeon 8500, Powerstrip tells me I am running in the 1x mode. When I go to change it to 4x in PS, I get an error message telling me that although my video card supports 4x, my mainboard bios is not set to 4x OR I have a Gart driver problem. IS there any other way to check to see if I am actually running in 4x, perhaps PS is wrong. I double checked my bios and it does indead have the 4x selected.
Thanks Mike

I'd ask WCPUID what it thinks (there's a section for motherboard info). can get that from www.aoafiles.com

I thought fastwrites where a nvidia only optimisation.
I might be wrong though.

Try setting to 1X in the bios and see if your benchamrks drop.
If they do then its probably a driver problem.

AGP 4x NOT!

Thanks for all your comments. I have Cupid already installed but did not realize it had that feature. I just use it to measure real time clock speeds. I will do that straight away.
My Radeon card has the standard bios. I have not changed it. I am using the newest Radeon driver. The part that had me confused is this Gart driver issue. I guess I don't have a full understanding of just what that is and is it a part of the Radeon driver package or what? Is it a seperate driver and if so, How do I check to see what I have now and where do I get the right one. MY current 3D Mark2001 scores are 8086. Given my sig below, I am not sure if that is good or bad. Mike

To get AGP 4X to work right; during the Via 4in1 install make sure you enable the AGP in "Turbo" mode.

4 in 1 drivers

Hum, I did install a month or so ago the newest 4 in 1 drivers.
I don't rememeber being prompted though to select anything. DId I just miss it? What does it default to if you don't select Turbo? And how do you change or fix it once you have installed the 4in1's without Turbo? Mike

There's a section during the 4-in-1 installation that asks what speed the agp needs to run, you need to select "turbo"

I believe the GART is the AGP driver (I haven't seen it in several months, my apologies for having XP and not having these issues anymore).

You can reinstall them a thousand times, it won't hurt. I would suggest the follow reinstall, in this order (since I do remember this worked sometimes):

1 -- 4-in-1 drivers
2 -- Directx 8.1/8
3 -- Video/sound drivers

I think it always made a difference in what order this is done as one seems to build on the next, but it could be just coincidence

4xagp

Thanks buddy, did as you said and all is working fine now. The reason I never noticed the turbo option before is because it is already selected by default during the install. Even though I Had the latest drivers, I must have had a bad download and the Gart driver was corrupted. Now my system is running strong at 4x and my 3d Mark scores jumped over 300 points.
By the way, you are right, the Gart driver is indeed the AGP driver.
The Gart stands for Graphics adapter rate transfer, as best I can tell. Thanks to everyone who have helped. Mike
