Question NVIDIA sneaks in the 6800XT

NVIDIA sneaks in the 6800XT
Well the card was quietly announced, to take on the ATI X800GT head on. It will be similar to the ATI offering, will have 8 pipelines, but will sell for a small amount less than the ATI counterpart, to sway the OEMs towards adding a NVIDIA card instead of the ATI piece.

I don't see this being a great card, not unless it's on a differant process to clock higher

Yeh you might as well just get a 6800LE and have the chance that it unlocks to full 16x1 and 6vp!

I did not find the exact article I had read yesterday.
This article comes up on a search of the web.

Question

I have a question guys! Why does Ati named it's card X800GT and Nvidia named it's card 6800XT? I thought the suffix 'GT' (for middle to high-end cards) was used only by Nvidia and 'XT' (for high-end cards) only by Ati..at least for the last generations (6* and X*) this was the rule. But now it's a little confusing, don't you think?

I think they do it to wind each other up.

ATI had the 9800XT top end card, so nvidia release the 5900XT mid range card

Nvidia have the 6600GT mid range card, so ATI gives us it's direct competitor the X800GT (getting the all important X, G, and T letters in the name) and so nvidia uses ATI's high end suffix XT for it's mid range card

Yeap, regularly. The two companies do need to agree on some things to keep standardisation etc.

For those interested, the 6800XT is identical to the 6800LE in that it can unlock, however they are based on the 12 pipe only 6800 core rather than the 16 pipe 6800GT/U core. So you can unlock it, up to 12 pipes, but no more.

Specs wise:

6800XT: 350Mhz core 600Mhz DDR1
6800LE: 320Mhz core 650Mhz DDR1

By using failed 6800 12 pipe chips rather than failed 6800 16 pipe chips, it is cheaper (the chip) and due to the 12 pipe chip, it clocks higher on average.

By using 600Mhz ram spec, they can use the next grade down of DDR1. The ram used on 6800LEs overclocks like hell, because it is meant to run at 700-800Mhz, and only runs at 650Mhz to stop it from outpacing the upper models.

The RAM being used on the 6800XT will have very limited overclocking potential as a result, but will be cheap too.

It will still feature a 256 bit memory bus.

I'm confused. Apperently, they're going to price them in the $150-180 range, but the 6800XT seems like it would be cheaper to make than a 6800LE, which costs only $130. What's the deal?

Exactly...I'm just trying to figure out why a multi-billion dollar company can't figure out something I can.

It will be around $10-20 less per part than the 6800LE. But that price is for OEMs. This is an OEM card, not a retail card.

Oh yea, forgot about that. nVidia and it's dual X16 SLI board for Dell and now this. How are they planning on competing with the X800GT then if it's not going to be bought by regular consumers?

Both ATI and Nvidia both still compete more with OEMs than on the retail market. It probably will be available as an OEM part at some outlets at a good price, but it is meant to compete at the non-enthusiast market.

This is also a market strategy by Nvidia is de-value ATI's lines....

High end ATI cards have the XT obviously, and since ATI put out the x800 GT...something NV uses, I really just believe both companies are trading punches for the mainstream market.
