Cool Radeon 9600se question

I currently have a Radeon 9600se. I know its not the greatest of cards, but until i can upgrade it, its what i am stuck with. My question is....is it possible to overclock it, and if so what do i need to do it. I have tried radlinker, and it wont do it, no matter what i set the new speeds at, it always reverts back to stock speeds. Since the cooling on this card is not all that great i am not looking for a major OC, just a small performance gain until i can get a new card( i am going to get a 9800pro). Any help with this dilemma would be greatly appreciated.

Does it atleast have a fan? my old 9250 didn't just a heatsink and it overheated pretty quickly. My FX5500 howfer has a fan and haven't had any heat problems.

Best overclocking utility for ati cards is ATItool, available at www.techpowerup.com. Simple to use, and will test for artifacts as it seeks the best oc on your gpu.

Also don't go for the 9800Pro unless you are getting a second hand/end of line bargain on it, go for a Geforce 6800LE.

They're around the same price and performance, but the LE has pretty good odds of unlocking to a 6800NU (12pipeline) and perhaps even the 16 pixelpipelines which put it way ahead of a 9800Pro. Add in the SM3 support and it's settled

Another good program for overclockng an ATI card is ATI Tray Tools. You can find out about it here http://www.radeon2.ru/atitray/ and download it here http://www.radeon2.ru/atitray/attsetup.exe.

Well, i found the reason i couldnt OC my card......i had to install the softmod drivers. otherwise, it would revert back to stock speeds no matter what i did. So now i have OC'ed it a little and it is staying at the new speeds. Its stock speeds are ....Core 324/mem 195 ....i have OC'ed it to core 390/ mem 219..nto much really but it has made a noticable difference in FPS on several games. The card only has a heat sink so i am hesitant to OC it too much. Hopefully i will be getting a new card soon. I checked out the 6800le, it looks pretty good, for around the same price as the 9800pro.....if it unlocks then that would be great. Thanks for the advice on OC tools...i ended up using ATI tool, its working great so far....

If you can get the 6800LE then it is quite possible to unlock it's pixel pipelines to 16 which can bring it up to a 6800GT.

If you can get it to unlock all pipes you will see performance simailar to a 6800gt, however the lower memory bandwidth makes quite a difference.

I was lucky with mine getting upto 930mhz on the memory which is pretty close to a GT anyway, it seems most people are getting between 780 and 890 on the memory as a rule, the core on the le/nu seems generally to be capable of between 350 and 430.
