mrpcman,
Where are you getting yor betas from?, ATI's Special Purpose drivers are OLD and I find pretty naff........

I get all my drivers from www.rage3d.com (OR linked to from there)

I tend to download all of them and then run through them benchmarking (And playtesting) until I find the best one for what I do...

That tends to give me the best for my tasks.

I haven't used the drivers direct from ATIs site for quite some time now.

Zorro.

Steak sandwiches are the best. I'd take it over veal.

mrpcman..

Download the lot and try them out.

Some of the drivers are skanky, and others work fine.

It depends on the hardware, software, games, etc that you use.

I started with the older ones and compiled a list of drivers and how they worked on my system....

(I don't have that list anymore, check the Crashed, OMG Lost Raid array, thread for a reason... )

Be sure to get the latest Betas from the link in my signature below. If they don't work, keep trying different ones.

No, you want the drivers from the ATI site. These are the latest drivers, beta or not. They're the 7189 and were availialbe unofficially this Saturday and officially posted Tuesday I think. They are the BEST ones at the moment, i've tested many a beta driver, trust me.

Check out the review at Hard OCP - I particularly liked the difference between running "quake.exe" and "quack.exe"

LOL

Something in those drivers really screwed up my system, spent 45 minutes getting windows to even boot last night (either was loading to a blank screen or garbled). Ended up going with the stock drivers and leaving good enough alone for now.

While the 8500 series Radeons look to be the first real competitor to our beloved Nvidia since the 3DFX days, there is one very important fact to consider. While looking at the numbers, they appear to be very competitive, and the somewhat early release of the Geforce Ti 500 is obviously Nvidia being concerned about the 8500's, they dumped them on the public w/o finished drivers. If you buy a Radeon 8500 now, you'll be saddled w/ a poorly performing, unstable card until ATI gets REAL drivers released for it. Yes, poorly performing drivers at launch have become as much a ATI hallmark as the All-in-wonder, but when they fix them, it will compete. The only question is, since the TI 500 was what the Geforce 3 should have been initially, will ATI have their drivers up to par before NVIDIA releases a legitimatly new/ better chip (Geforce 3.5, or is it just Geforce 3 Ultra). The Ti models are barely distinguishable from the original in performance, so I don't consider them anymore than an anti-ATI marketing deal.

But with ati's trackrecord, it may take a long time for us to see good drivers. Why can't they just standardize their cores like nvida so they only have to make one driver?
