Nvidia G80 mystery starts thickening

Charlie over at The Inquirer is thinking that something may not be quite kosher with the nVidia G80 :

"In any case, NV is heavily downplaying the DX10 performance, instead shouting about DX9 to anyone who will listen. If the G80 is more or less two 7900s like we hear, it should do pretty well at DX9, but how it stacks up to R600 in DX9 is not known. R600 should annihilate it in DX10 benches though. We hear G80 has about 1/3 of it's die dedicated to DX10 functionality."

LoL. it's not a unified shader chip, so will have abysmal DX10 performance. Not really new news...jsut confirmation of old rumours.

the new additions to the die area are geometry shader section as well as a few adjustments to the 7900GTX tech. Each stage of the pipeline must be able to hand off it's work, or take in new work....and doing this without unified shaders is gonna make this card a waste of time.

Thankfully for nVidia, DX10 in games will not be fully supported until this time next year(look for all september/october 2007 game releases to feature DX10 in some way), so the DX9 performance is what they are after anyway. but what a crappy product. Geforce 5800, anyone?
