OK, I sold the 7300LE and a program and am ready to get serious.
Both you and danrok recommended the 8800GT. I've looked and read and that card is fine with me.Newegg has the Asus 8800Gt 512MB $99 after $20 MIR. Ebay has the same card, same price but W/O MIR.

The 9600GT isn't out. It's $96 on Ebay but that was only one card. Most cards with a lower price were in the $125 range.

It confused me when thundrbird and Samuknow were discussing the OCing of their Vida cards. Not only was their terminology different but the numbers didn't add up either. Then Samuknow was delighted that the 9600 GT did almost as well as the 8800 GT. I was totally confused.
I was totally out of my league! So I put their specs head to head.
At first glance, the numbers favor the 9600GT. Then why is Sam so surprised!

I discovered that both cards come in different memory amounts. You can get the 8800GT w/ 256Mb, 512MB, and 1024MB.
The 9600GT only comes in two flavors, 512MB, and 1024MB! That would effect the comparison somewhat.

So as I mentionerd earlier, price is going be the decideing factor. unless you have some words of wisdom. OH....Please have some words of some kind!!

I was thinking about the 8800GS [ there is the Alpha Dog version to] but things have fallen into line money wise.
A nurse down at the care center where my wife had to abide a couple of times got tired of her computer being slow and sluggish and taking so long to get any thing done. [She didn't know the term defrag.] So for $50 I'll do a clean install of her stuff and a few of my own. Then i go to the bank because the video card fund has reach critical mass. I believe the 9600GT for $89 after MIR is going to be the winner.
KFA2 Geforce 9600 GT Video Card - OC, 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, HDMI Support 96GFF6HUUEXV at TigerDirect.com
It's weird because the Tiger Direct stats for the KFA2 are higher than the stats at WIKI but they don't mention any factory overclock or any thing like it. Not a lot-like the core instead of being 650, the KFA2 card is 675, and the mem clock instead of 1800 is 2000 on the KFA2.
But it's not over till the fat lady sings!

Cool! Glad you are able to get what you actually want instead of settling for what you can get...
Don't know much about that company as I've never heard of them before...
Make sure you got extra Memory on your mobo as this card uses "shared" memory & I don't know how much that is as they don't say in the specs.
"NVIDIA® TurboCache Technology
Shares the capacity and bandwidth of dedicated video memory and dynamically available system memory for turbocharged performance and larger total graphics memory."

Now EVGA I have heard of and they got a great rep for their OCing potential too.
That's what I like about my EVGA 8800GTS...is it's built-in overclocking headroom to add performance for free!

Stock:

GPU: 513
Shader: 1188
Memory: 1584

Everyday OC: (for over a year now for hours a day)

GPU: 612
Shader: 1404
Memory 2016

High (MAX) OC

GPU: 648
Shader: 1512
Memory: 2052

The reason for my suprise is that the 9600 series or any x600 series is usually a mid range card. One the masses will settle for due to price. The 8800GT or any od the x800GT cards were not intended for that same market. They were intended for the hard core gamer and sported a price tag to suit. I had not seen that close of a match to the two series of card in two consecutive generations before. You realize I have been in computers long before a voodoo Banshee or TNT was a nice vid card. So I have seen some history.

Great buy. Look forward to some benchies.

Nice to hear from you Sam.
I didn't realize that there was any significance to the 600's or 800's but now that you've said it, how could I have missed it? Sheeeeesh!

The PSU shouldn't have any problem with it. Power requirements are a 400w PSU with +12@26a
My PSU is 500W with (2)+12v@33a.

I did the best i could with the limited knowledge I have. Price ended up being the deciding factor. This card is an OC model and numbers wise it beats the 8800GT. Price beat it too. I did alright.

3DMark06 Score please...
Mine of course is just a tad over 12,000.
This is using the Geforce 177.83 Drivers with PhysX Enabled.
I would install these drivers on that card for the best performance & to get the most out of it.

What are the common settings for benchmark? Just the default ones, or is there a set every one uses?

NO, I'm poor and with my luck you'll beat it.
For your sake I hope you do! Really!
Btw, my first score was 8812 with everything at stock speeds.

My best score is 12162 @ 3.6GHz...so far.

Also if you're interested, you can run this benchmark to for kicks to see how your new card does...

Nvidia has a projected guestimate that with my stock set up I'll do 8900 or so in 3dmark06, and we all know that ain't going to be the case!
