OK, so what's inside these things?

The plain Intellimouse is held together by one screw hidden under the rear foot-pad; peel off the foot, undo the screw and you can hinge the lid up and off. You'll need to take a little care when peeling off the plain mouse's foot-pad so as not to bend it.
The full link.

Next question: what LED to use?

I have a Logitech, but I would assume they use the same voltage LED.

Seen conflicting results with blue LEDs, some work some don't.

Ask the mighty google (in plain engrish) and it shall bear its fruits

Actually I've got the Intellimouse Xplorer 3.0, but your info helped out Pinky...thanks. What color would ya suggest? I've got a black setup but am looking for a break in the monotony of black. I was thinking perhaps a green or red color...

Green LED with clear body?? lol

Red and Black stripes in nature indicate "poisonous!" to other animals

That's why lady bugs are red with black dots, to fool their prey.
