Samsung 955DF

I bought a pair of these for my kids, base on good comments.
On my kid's machines, the pictures look beautiful and clear. However, text, like in the forum looks a bit grainy. This happens at all resolutions, color depths and refresh. At very high resolutions, it doesn't look grainy, but it's too small for my kids to read.

The video cards are a 16mb Banshee, and a 64MB SIS315.
I don't want to swap out the video card unless necessary.
What going on here? bad monitors, bad video cards, or my vision

I've got the 753dfx. Not quite the same I know but the same technology. I'll put back in the GF2mx tonight and check what it looks like at different settings.

SteveI
I see what you mean exactly, I think its the monitor. I've tried with a 4400 and the GF2 and on this 17" the first acceptable, not perfect, results (both cards) are at 1024*768. Anything below that looks grainy for text although pics etc look okay.

Thanks dod,
I got these for my kid's eyes. I figure they have a lifetime of looking at artificial//technologically generated images to look forward to, and figured better picture quality would make it easier on the eyes.

The problem goes away @ ~1100x800... These are 19" monitors, so it seem consistent with yours. I'm really torn since I've already paid 60 on shipping and will be out another 60 to return them. Maybe I'll try their tech support.
Thanks again.

Odds are it's the monitor...or those stupid filters they had on the gf2 cards... and possibly others. i removed mine and it improved 2d quality...that was a while ago though so i don't remember much. :clown I always buy monitors locally though so i can see the quality first hand.

well, this post was a waste of your reading time. heh

Well, TS is BS..
She said 100hz refresh will fry the monitors... dont do it!!
duh... they're spec'd for 160 at low res.

I tried to nicely explain... she couldn't get past the refresh... finally she looked up specs, and said absolutely nothing useful. The more thought out (and polite) my questions were, the more she got annoyed at me.... duh.

I'll keep 'em. They mostly play games, and don't read anything on their machines atm... When they start, I'll up the res for them.

These things are beautiful for DVDs.

The main negative on those monitors for me is the contrast. The black is always somewhat grey. I have been fairly happy with my Samsung 900NF, however, which uses the Mitsubishi Diamondtron tube.

I am, however looking to replace my 19"/15" combo with a 17"/17"/17" combo to keep my Parhelia company...

I have the Samsung 955df and I have no problems what so ever. The image quality is fantastic and the text is as clear as can be at 1024x768. I have the refresh set to 100Hz and it is great. I got this monitor because my wife gets sick and could seizure with other monitors (she has epilepsy). This is the best monitor I could find for her. She loves it and can spend hours without feeling dizzy like she did with other monitors. Not sure why you are having those problems unless it is indeed the gfx cards. I have a Ti4600.
