It's in the freezer!!!!!!!!

So how long should I keep it in there (Rage Fury Pro, I want to practice on it before de-sinking my GeForce) before trying to de-sink it? And is the "twist and pull" method the best or should I try to put a wedge in and pry it off?

eobard 21st April, 2002 04:09 AM

HELLO?????????????? 2 hours in and no go. Anyone??????????????????????????????

Phiber 21st April, 2002 04:23 AM

i think you should just keep it there about 30 mins

Pinky 21st April, 2002 04:45 AM

Never done it myself, but the recommended times from others is 30 minutes as phiber indicated.

eobard 21st April, 2002 05:00 AM

Well 2 hours didn't work, can 30 minutes be any different???

mrpcman 21st April, 2002 06:13 AM

twisting it is still the best way imo because the odds of you ripping the core off are a bit lower.

mrpcman 21st April, 2002 06:13 AM

oh yeah, some people leave their cards in over night.

eobard 21st April, 2002 07:07 AM

I think I'm going to take it to a friends place, put it in a bar fridge in his basement and then after a half an hour go straight to his bench vice, lock it in and twist.

BongWater 21st April, 2002 07:27 AM

30-60 minutes freezer time but be sure its in an anti-static bag.

Pull it out and take a butter knife (with the rounded end) Put a folded over business card or matchbook under the knife and just wedge ithe sink up a bit, trying to move it to one side at the same time if you can (twisting action I guess). Once you get it just partially up, move the knife in a bit farther and do it again. Keep going and she'll come off pretty easily.

BE SURE that whatever you use between the kife and the board covers (or better still, is away from) any traces etc on the board. And go slow...common sense stuff.

I put my bros voodoo5 in there for 1hr- and wraped it in two anti static bags and taped it so no moister gets in- the cooler poped off fine- spyder

eobard 21st April, 2002 07:59 AM

What happens if it isn't completely sealed? Will even a small amount of moisture screw up the card or will it be ok if it's left to dry for a day?

BongWater 21st April, 2002 08:26 AM

It'll dry out...don't worry

surlyjoe 21st April, 2002 12:18 PM

ya man, lock that sink in the vice and twist it! I never hosed one like that yet. (versus 2 with the priyng method)

I just ran quake loop for 45 mins and pried out the heatsink afterwards........

I pop 'em in the ice-box for an hour, then take 'em out and hit the edge of the sink with a small ball-ping hammer. Crude, but effective, and I havn't damaged any yet . . .

Gave that a shot, all I did was bend some of the outer edge fins a bit.

Two substitutes: 1) Library card
2) Butter knife

It's off! Hopefully my GeForce won't be any more difficult.

BongWater 22nd April, 2002 02:48 AM

Nope I still say butter knife and FOLDED business card! Anything else is just plain foolishness!
